Question about "Why CAS?" essay

There are many things about Cornell that I love that aren't related to my major or that particular department at Cornell. Of course, there are many things I love that are related to these two things, but I also would like to mention student organizations at Cornell that I'd love to join and even maybe the natural environment at Cornell (would this be stupid? I really love nature and am thrilled with the fact that Cornell is located in the middle of gorgeous, scenic surroundings).

Anyway, where would I be able to discuss these things? The "Why CAS?" essay seems to be solely focused on the academic offerings in CAS.

Yea, the CAS essay is definitely only about the academic programs. How about yor common app essay? You can segue into the “why cornell” part and somehow tie it to one of the prompts.

Well, since I’m submitting my Common App essay to other colleges, it probably wouldn’t be good to mention Cornell. :stuck_out_tongue: And my essay is already long enough, so to add more…

Would it be appropriate to talk about other “Why Cornell” stuff in “Additional Info”? :-/

except, you can submit different versions of the common app to each school. a lot of people do make their common app essays school specific, but there is a limit on the # of versions you can have. Beyond that, I’m not sure it’s necessary to mention what you love about Cornell, since most people share those sentiments if they’re applying (or at least I hope they do). The addt’l info box is more to elaborate on activities that can’t fit in the activities section or explain circumstances that may have resulted in a drop in grades, etc.

Hmmm…that’s true. But I feel my Common App essay says more about me that just listing more things about Cornell that I like. Hopefully I’ll get to communicate all the things I like about Cornell in my interview then! :)

long enough? Uhh dude just warning you right away its about depth not breadth. Dont ramble use substance

^Uhh dude I already know that. That’s exactly my point. My essay is already on the long side; I certainly don’t need to add more and make it longer.

this is probably me just being plain stupid/paranoid but:

when you guys say that “the CAS essay is definitely only about the academic programs” do you mean broad subjects like biology or literature or specific courses like genetics or – i don’t know – romance novels after the 19th century (i just made those courses up to convey my point, so yeah)

but anyways, if anyone could throw some light on this, it would be much appreciated.

thanks :)

^ You can talk about any academic programs, broad or specific.

But you can also mention Cornell ECs if they’re relevant to your academics…my CAS essay about English/journalism included my interest in writing for the Daily Sun.

thanks  helped a lot!

Sorry if I am ruining the thread but wow there really is a way to submit different versions of common app?!

you just submit it at different times…you don’t do it all at once. Submit one, change it a bit, submit it to your next school. etc.

@lifegr

Yea, you can make actual multiple versions, ie if you submit one ED and you don’t want to submit that version for RD. Go to the applicant help center and search “versions” - you’ll find a question like “how to make an alternate version”, click on that, you’ll find out how to do it.

be careful when duplicating the common app though bc all uploaded documents get wiped and need to be uploaded again. obviously you’ll get the warning about your main essay, but if you uploaded under additional info, you can send a new version and never know that that doc never was attached.
