Question about Writing Supplemental Essays Please?

Hi, I'm a high school senior applying for many colleges.

FOr my common app, I wrote about a significant experience and how it impacted me. I talked about my family's financial situation and living arrangements in 2011. I felt like I wrote a really strong essay about it.

For my supplements, I did not know whether or not I should further discuss the struggles that I have been through in my life because I know I can write a really moving essay about that but I don't know if it is redundant. Or should I showcase my intellectual and creative side? Like in the case of University of Chicago, I have an option to do a free topic or one of their creative essays. I am a bit stumped.

Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you!

I don’t think it’d be good to be redundant, but rather if your teachers/counselor haven’t sent in their recommendations in yet, then have one of them be aware of the struggles you’ve been through, so that they can talk about it rather than it looking like you’re throwing a pity party for yourself… does that make sense? And that way you can also show your creative side.

Thank you!

Now I just have to decide which one will showcase my creative side more.
