Question about Ws

Hello, I am a ccc student attending Santa Monica College. I made the mistake of taking pre calc during the winter term (which is 6 weeks compared to the normal 16) and this was a mistake because I haven't taken any math classes since 10th grade and I feel like I would benefit more from taking it during the full 16 week spring semester. I feel like I can probably pull off a C or B during winter but I'd much rather take the 16 week and pull off an A. So I now need to drop this class which will give me a W. How much will this W affect my transfer chances? ( target schools: UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB) I'm a computer science major if that matters and this is my freshman year. I have a 4.0 gpa so far but this short session math is moving too fast since I'm pretty rusty on my math. I'd appreciate any input.

One W is hardly worth stressing. You have to report it on the UC application, but it would be disregarded during admission evaluation.

OK thank you. I know 1 W isn’t too bad but I figured since its in a math class and I’m a CS major it would hurt, but thank you for the input.

Don’t worry about one W on your transcript, I had to withdraw from an entire semester once due to a work-related issue. Just explain why you had to withdraw on your application.

@moose ok thank you

You could have 10 Ws and be fine for admission to most of the UC’s because of academic forgiveness. I wouldn’t suggest trying it, but it’s not all that uncommon especially with people that have gone back to CC after dropping out. That said, if you accumulate more than 3+ and you want to get into a decent grad school that’s where they’ll come back to bite you.
