Question After Scholarship Day

My son went to Scholarship day last Friday. Anybody knows how the scholarship amount is decided? Is it based on how student did on Scholarship Day only(discussions and the essay)?

I’m also interested in knowing the answer to this question…

It’s difficult to say with any certainty how they determine which scholarships to award to which students, as the process is not very transparent.

I’m pretty sure the teacher that leads the discussion and reads the essays writes an evaluation on each student. This is one of the most important considerations the university takes into account when awarding scholarships, but it is likely not the only consideration. For example, if a professor gives each student a glowing recommendation, it would be quite difficult to determine who gets what scholarship based on that information alone. Accordingly, I would think they would also consider the merits of each students’ application, particularly their essays.

We were told that students will be ranked but just don’t know what the rankings will be based on. At least we will know next week. Is that the minimum scholarship $2500/year?

For in-state students, yes. You’ll know soon enough what the award will be. Best of luck!

Thank you, GoHeelsGoAmerica! Also, is Cobb a good dorm to live in? Not isolated from everything?

Cobb is very quiet. Almost no freshmen I know enjoy living there.

Really? Why? I am thinking about putting my son in there since he will be in honors program if we decide to go to unc.

Because it’s so quiet. RAs tend to be really strict. People are generally able to make friends, but it’s not social overall.

And it’s so quiet. I was walking through the hall one Friday night around 10 and it was dead. The motion-sensing lights will turn off in the hallway because people stay in their rooms. The building is nice, but I would not recommend living there as a freshman.

Also…does your son get any input? He should be the one to decide where he wants to live next year. South campus is much better for freshmen.

Don’t worry. My son does get his input on where he lives. I heard south campus is much more social than north campus. It’s better to have a balanced campus life. When we were at Scholarship Day, I talked to several students lived in Cobb, they seemed enjoyed living there.

NCMOM2012 - My son is a freshman this year and is an honors student. He is in McIver which is unusual as it is mostly upperclassmen. It is also very quiet. Mostly very studious type kids. My son loves it and has applied to have the same room next year. He has several freshman friends that live in Cobb and they like it. He goes there regularly to hang out and have “movie nights”. He also likes being close to classes and Franklin St. I’ve asked my son if he as any regrets about not living on south campus his freshman year and he said not in the least. He hates the thought of ever having to live on south campus. So, it’s really dependent on your son’s personality. My son likes his nice quiet dorm and would rather have his toe nails pulled out than live on south campus.

catdaddy, Thank you for your post. That’s exactly what I am looking for. My son is very studious kid and also like nice quiet dorm room. He is not into crazy parties. I can see him hang out with his friends and have “movie nights”.

Has anyone heard about the results of Scholarship Day yet? Thanks.

I was told that scholarship offers will be mailed out Tues or Wed. So, it might be in the mail today!

Actually, there was an update a few moments ago, and apparently they will be mailed out this Friday.
