Question and Answer Session

What do most students normally do out of UCR? Is there a local mall or any attractions there, etc ?

My guidance counselors at my school went to a meeting at UCR to hear information regarding about UCR's admission process there. They spoke to the admission officer there and said GPA was the only main factor they look at. They look at the test scores a little but they don't look at hours of EC's, essays you wrote, activities, etc. The officer stated that GPA is what they only look for.

What do you know about the admission process there? Can you explain the admission process there? I know my guidance counselor really well and he wouldn't make this up. What do you think?

By the way,

Many props to you nxs for pumpin up the Highlanders the way they should. Its much appreciated.

: )

mrxalleycat: i'm pretty sure they take the other things into account. the fails and withdrawls i have on my academic record surely affected my gpa. later i became serious about my education and my good grades reflected that, but it still didn't erase the bad grades of the past. in other words, i couldn't have gotten accepted by gpa alone.

"What do most students normally do out of UCR? Is there a local mall or any attractions there, etc ?"

Riverside is an equal distance from mountains and beaches, San Diego and Los Angeles, and more. There are malls and many new stores in Riverside.

This is a little random, but how much would a C impact my transcript? I'm taking math5 at UCR, bombed the midterm and highly doubt I'll pass with anything higher than a C. And this is even more random... what is included in the dorm room?

Impact your transcript? What do you mean by that? Your High School transcript or your college transcript?

Bummer... you bombed the midterm, I hope you realize to do a lot better now :) Because I was in the same situation as you are. I ended up with a C in English 4A/D . ****ed me off. Infact, every single person that took summer school for english (Eng 4/5) ended up with a C. Basically you'll be entering college with a 2.0 (That's academic probation right there! LOL), scary huh?

Anyways, I recommend a couple of energy drinks, some coffee, and no doz and study straight for 2 days. :P If you do end up with a C, start racking in A's asap, because going back up to a decent gpa is hard as hell. I'm up to a 3.3 right now from that summer C, still not acceptable in my opinion.

About the dorm room, if you still have your housing packet (the packet that gives you pictures of the dorms and the room sizes), it should state what is in the room itself. From what I recall, theres the bed, drawer, mirror, desk and that's it. It's probably best if you look in the book yourself so you can see the layout of the room.

Just some food for thought...

You may want to double check that whole academic probation thing. I don't think that its a 2.0 that puts you on AP, I believe its having less than a 2.0 that will put you there; but I'm not sure. (Just make sure you get at least a C; and not a C-... in that sense, there's a huge difference between a 2.0 and a 1.7)

Anyway, don't get discouraged. The transition from high school to college is a bit more involved than most people think; you have to completely change your study habits. Whereas in high school you may not have had to study nearly as much as you are going to need to here. For example I got through high school not a problem with a 3.5; I had finished at algebra 2 and I thought I was ready, but I got placed into Math 3. So once I sucked that disappointment up, I took Math 3 in the summer (i got a B) and then I took Math 5 in the fall (I got a B, again). So understand that everyone has to deal with and handle the change.

The C will impact your transcrip, yes, but it won't destroy it. One thing that I came to realize (and it wasn't until my 2nd year) is that you need to study to understand the material, not pass some random test. If you go to class, take notes, and then go home and read the text and you still don't get it, keep going. Go to your professor's office hours or you TA or even the Learning Center to find out what your missing. Knowing that 2 + 2 = 4 is never as valuable as understanding why two plus two equals four. I'm using very primative terms here (obviously) but the point remains the same. Remember that numbers and symbols are just that... numbers and symbols. Once you start focusing on understanding the material for yourself and putting it into your own words, the grades will follow.

Don't worry about the C, just try not to get anything lower than that.

Also, your dorm room comes with a Bed, desk, dresser, mini fridge and microwave. And if you live in pentland you get your own AC =)!

Anyways, does anybody know when school starts?

Yeah instruction begins Thursday, September 29th.

Yes, instruction begins on the 29th but you're expected to move-in on the 24th.

I don't know where the misconception is coming from but all the dorms have their own A/C unit. Half of my counselees asked if there was A/C in the other dorms besides Pentland. I actually prefer East Lothians because their temperature ranges from 55 degrees to 90 (maybe). Compared to Pentland's 68-72.

yes, there is AC in the other dorms, however Pentland is the only place where they actually let you control your own room temperature. All the other dorms are controlled by one unit.

lol, what?

Well hobofromdowntown by all means you're welcome to visit my dorm room then and see my temperature control, that is if I get placed into East Lothian again. I'll tell ya where I'm placed @ on Sept. 2nd when I move in.

Well its September 2nd. I've been placed in West Lothian and I miss East Lothian :( but it's okay! I will make the best of things :D. There is a temperature control in my room by the way :)

Edit: For now, only my room's temperature control works, but later in the year, that might even change.

Hope you all are enjoying the rest of your break and come back ready to learn! ;]

nxs thank you for your advice. A UCR Business Administration degree will open doors that a Business Economics degree from UCLA or UCSB, a Management Science degree from UCSD, an Economics degree from UCI, a Managerial Economics degree from UCDavis, and a Business Management Economics degree WILL NOT OPEN. I will defintely tell my brother to attend UCR because of its Business Administration degree over UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCDavis, UCI and UCSC.

Everyone, listen to nxs and tell friends and family to go to UCR over higher ranked schools taht DO NOT have a "Business Administration" degree.

Also, all Cal State schools have "Business Administration" degrees. If you are a Business Economics or Managerial Economics major at another UC, you should try to transfer to either UCR or a Cal State school because they offer a "Business Administration" degree. Save your future. Apply NOW!!

Yes, but principles, as much as I agree with you, some doors won't open that would have with a UCLA Biz Econ degree. It depends on what one is after, but UCR can be a great stepping stone to many things.

bumoopopppppppppp

Well, allow me to retort.

"Why do you think UCR is bashed so much?""

Because the students are dumb, the campus is ugly, it's located in the 909, it has low academic standards, it's smoggy, etc.

"Even though there's smog; I haven't met a single person that is literally about to die from it."

Actually, a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine found that air in several SoCAl community (including Riverside), causes lung damage in kids. The smog is worse in Riverside than it is in LA, btw.

"The UCR joke(s) have come up SO many times that there really isnt a way to stop it except to let time take it's course."

Over time, the jokes will only get better and better. It's like an aged cheese.

"Because we are the least funded of the UC schools. Most of our funds come from other sources."

Really? from where? I know it's not from alumni, because UCR has the LOWEST alumni giving rate of ANY SCHOOL IN THE NATION (check out US News).

"Enrollment is currently only at 17,104. We're projecting an 21,000 enrollment by 2010."

Too bad enrollment has declined each year for the past two years.

"Also by 2010, UCR campus would be renovated like no other. It's ridiculous how much more beautiful the Riverside campus is going to be."

And is a big vacuum cleaner going to come by and suck up all the smog in the sky? Because everything in Riverside has a brown glow to it.

"What is a good student? From High School? But to answer your question, No - Many students there struggle, especially in their Science classes."

That's cuz they're a) extremely unmotivated and b) not so bright.

"If you attend a UC, you know that green Biology book? Yes, that one. Do you know who wrote it? A professor at UCR."

And how many biology lectures does Campbell give? 1 or 2. And does he hold office hours? Nope. Does he really care?? Nope.

"Those grades are extremely imporant for students trying to enter our BioMed Program w/ UCLA Med School. Instead of the traditional 8 years it takes to graduate (undergrad and med), you can do it in 7!"

No, sorry, they changed it. It's 8 years now.

"Is it really as boring as people say?
UCR, no - Any college in the U.S. or even the world is what you make of it. "

Yes it is. It's actually more boring than people say, no matter what you make of it.

"There could be a bunch of programs for students available but it's up to the students to actually push themselves to go."

But students at UCR don't push themselves to do anything. 70% of them simply drive home on the weekends, leaving a desolate wasteland behind.

But how dangerous is it to walk around UCR? Not dangerous at all. If you do feel that you need someone to walk with.

Just don't jog around on the track and offer to pick up someone's contact lens.

"Have I read StayoutofRiverside's posts?" Well now I have."

I'll do a search. I like his name.

"UCR is not ranked as high as other UC's but what does the rank actually "say?

It says a lot, actually.

"Who makes the ranks? Certainly not the students."

Obviously not. Otherwise, every student would rank their own school #1.

"Well if you're REALLY into Biology or Science related courses. Our professors and faculty at one year have had more AAAS Fellows than Harvard!"

Well that goes to show how useless the number of AAAS fellows really is.

Just don't jog around on the track and offer to pick up someone's contact lens.

HAHAHAHHAHA i remember my friend telling me about that.
