Yes, we like our air clean but we deal with smog too. I live in Sacramento, which is as Norcal as you could possibly get, yet we have really bad air quality. Not exactly the same thing as smog, but close.

Kaza, yes you will be able to change your passwork into something else later when you log onto Growl. Your net ID, no can do. That is pretty much permanent. Although you have different alias for your email, IE, your netID@student.ucr.edu or your netID@ucr.edu or First.lastname@email.ucr.edu for a more professional look.

Beeyonks, if you really REALLy prefer to live under rock, :P most of Pentland is pretty quiet, and that really depends how your suitemates are. AI has more space in double rooms. Pentland is the smallest? I forget but check the housing packet where it states the dimensions of your reshall room. The bathroom question is hard to answer, depends how cleanly your hallmates are. They are cleaned daily on weekdays, weekends they pack up. Housekeeping doesnt' do weekends.

Panda, Riverside is not that bad but lately we've been getting a lot of fog and that has made people think that the smog has gotten worst. Idiots. Anyways :) it's not that bad. Not like you'll come down here and fry and choke to death. Although I'm telling you early to prepare for Bear Facts and the summer heat. THAT is killer but for at least half of the year it's real nice. When I was a counselor I tried to keep my groups in the shade at all times and walk indoors. I hope you all get a good counselor :) I won't be doing it this year.

I lived in Moreno Valley long time ago. When I looked at the direction to Riverside, there were smogy clouds above Riverside especially during summer.

In a news article that I read, it was reported that polluted air in Riverside may cause asthma or other respiratory diseases to kids. How about to adults? Even to college students, bad air may cause a health problem in Riverside?

I know that there are lots and lots of trees in UCR green campus. So, I guess it may not be a practical problem.

nxs, please give me your feedback based on facts, or statistics, if possible. Thanks.

Of course I'm not going to lie to you. It is pretty bad but not as bad as you may think. I have never heard of anyone I know and the people they know or any rumors about someone dying in Riverside cause of the air. The only reason Riverside has this smog problem is the stable air above it. Traps all that crud in from the North, West, and probably all over the place.

I have no statistics to believe but let me say this, if students are able to do sports here, heavy running out doors (track, tennis, soccer, etc), and if they can survive, I'm sure you can unless you have a health problem now. It really is not that big of a deal. I mean, all of socal is polutted unless you live by the beach. EVERYWHERE in the valley you'll see smog. It just happens Riverside is the worst of the bunch :. Thank you industrial revolution. When it's clear in socal, it's clear in Riverside. If it's clear in Riverside, then it's damn good everywhere else. Depends on the air my friend.

Moreno Valley is really close to Riverside and the difference from the air there and here is slim or none at all.

If you're really that scared about the air quality here, well I don't know if you plan to stay here all 4 years but after that, you won't to worry about it. Four years in "smog" is not like Four years in radiation :) You won't die from it, or well I hope not. But you see these warnings everywhere in socal once it starts to heat up.

I feel that I'm going on and on so I'll stop now.

I echo sam_7770's concern...I have discussed with my counselor my concern of going to Riverside specifically because of the air issue. I have allergies and asthma...I've actually been hospitalized once for it.

I don't think it will be a huge problem, but it would be bad if I wanted to play sports, huh? My counselor just advised me to keep in touch regularly with my regular doctor and also check in at the campus health center asap

Hey Raymond!
Lol, I've asked you so many questions it's like "Hey old buddy, old pal"
Anyways, one more question...
I just wanted to know if you're going to be there at Bear Facts.
Do you not work as a orientation counselor anymore?

Thanks!

Hey kaza,

Yes you have asked me a lot and most likely I'll probably keep answering.
No I won't be there for Bear Facts this summer. I have to take care of some stuff. I have summer school at a community college near where I live. I highly recommend you take summer school at a community college. Much cheaper ! 100 vs 800 is the comparison in price. "Quality" doesn't matter much because they are GE/Breath.

You know being a counselor is hard hard hard work. I have bittersweet memories from being one. In a sense I know that I tried to do as much as possible for my groups to get the best experience and have respect towards others. Sometimes I might have been a bit strict but from the hmmmm 6/7 student groups I've had, 4 of them gave real positive thanks throughtout the 2 days. The other 2/3 others were part of my bad days, through the middle of the sessions from exhaustion and being a little sick.

I hope you have a good counselors cause there are those bad ones. Guaranteed. Why? Well the pay is horrible and most of you are a handfull! haha But if this was last year, I'd do it without pay because my goal was to help others like my counselor did, make an impact on the future, better communication skills, leadership skills, and other things.

Also, in August I'll be studying abroad @ Hong Kong University for the Fall Quarter. I can't wait! Jeez, it's one of the best business school's in all of Asia. In the top 5 at least. They're so hardcore over there that they dress up in suits everyday! Can't wait for the experience!
