Question -- changing stuff after sending an app?

Hi,

If I send an application to a college and have to change the additional information before I send the app to another, can I do that? The essay is the only thing I can't change, right?

PS Responses would be very useful if the poster has actually submitted an application.

You can change any part of your Common App between submission as many times as your want except for the essay which is has limit of 3 revisions. After each submission, your essay will be locked. You may unlock the essay twice for editing before it becomes permanently locked.

Hi billcsho,

I just want to follow-up on your answer. My wife just returned from a college adviser meeting and told me that there is a limit of three revisions to the common app. She is worried that my daughter’s app, which was started a few weeks back and has “partial” information may be locked.

My daughter has not yet entered anything in the essay prompts. She has filled in her activities with preliminary descriptions.

Since her app has not yet been submitted to any school, is she able to make unlimited edits to all sections of the app?

I am 99.99% sure the answer is yes based on your answer, but my wife will only rest easy with 100% confidence.

Thanks!

“My wife just returned from a college adviser meeting and told me that there is a limit of three revisions to the common app.” Pretty sure she misunderstood. Limit of three revisions to the essay. I’m under the impression from all these news articles I’ve read on CA4 that the rest of the app can be changed before sending more apps.

I can confirm from our D’s experience this year that it is easy to change all parts of the app in any way you want before submitting and between submissions to schools, other than the main essay. (The Additional Info is freely changeable.) The main essay locks after the first real completed submission. You can unlock it a total of two times and it is freely editable once it’s unlocked and before it’s submitted again. That means an applicant can submit a total of three versions of the essay at most. Upon submitting the third version, the essay is locked and cannot be unlocked again.

Can we submit the old version again even if we’ve changed the essay and submitted the new version to another school?

The old version will not be saved but you can certainly make changes to revert to what you said in an earlier submissions. On the essay, it’s the number of ‘unlocks’ that counts, not the modifications you make. So, if you unlock the essay and make no changes before submitting again or if you unlock and then change it back to exactly the way it was already submitted previously, that will still be counted as one of your two maximum unlocks.

Thanks for the clarifications! I don’t like this new CommonApp lol.

I have not heard anyone like it yet. :)

If I revise my essay after it is submitted, will it change for the colleges that already received it?

No, once you submit an app you can no longer make changes to it.
