Now I absolutely did not visit Columbia ever, nor did I meet any admissions officers... but I sent in a picture anyway. I felt like, hell, why not?

Do you think they really like to see pictures, but they don't want to make it seem like the admissions process is superficial.. so they say its for the purpose of face-recognition?

If they don't ask, dont send. If it's optional, it's always a good idea to send it. It shows self-confidence. And it's pretty awful for someone to say that the unattractive will be rejected. It's most likely 1) to prevent or DETER people from lying about their race, etc, 2) stick a face on a stack of papers.

Well, the question is are you good looking??

Lol.. Jk.
There's no harm in sending a picture.. might as well.. .... Adds a visual element to your otherwise rather "tedious and boring" looking app that just has text.. And it's more personal.. the adcom will feel like they know you better, if they see a photo.... (Now this is just my opinion!!)
Might as well send in a lovely photo of yourself!!

I sent a picture, I never visited the campus nor have I met anyone admissions people. While its optional, I figured I had nothing to lose. Besides it shows them I have the ability to attached a file.

Sending a picture, although not probable, may open a door to bias (racial, personal etc..). why risk it?
Moreover, having a picture simply for the sake of seperating you application from the others (which is a ridiculous justification) is something you should do only if you feel desperate. There are much more important things that the admission officers care about.
