I am an accepted student strongly considering Beloit. I was wondering what classes typically have teaching assistants? As a Liberal Arts college I’d expect few if any, but it’s hard to find info about this. (I would rather learn from professors only and so view TAs as a mild con.)
I don’t know specifically for Beloit, but TAs are typically used at research universities which offer Ph.D degrees in that field of study. So, TAs are Ph.D. candidates who lead discussion sections that go with the massive lecture class taught by the professor. In some instances, Ph.D. students will teach a seminar in their area of research. So, the model for using TAs really happens at the large, research university.
At some small liberal arts colleges, students who are upper-level majors may lead optional study groups or discussions in Intro courses in the department. But they are not “teachers” for the class.
At an LAC you will find TAs in support roles- helping with labs, for example- not teaching.
There aren’t any. T.A.’s are used to assist in large lecture halls. Beloit doesn’t have those kinds of classes.
