Question for 2010 or Recent Transfer Students

I know there are many other threads out there regarding housing, but I didn't see a lot of answers out there for people that are transferring to UCSB in the near future. I saw a bunch of posts that went unanswered within the other threads, so hopefully we can get some feedback.

How are the undergraduate apartment housing options for transfer students? Based on the housing application it looks like the options are: Santa Ynez, El Dorado, and Westgate. As for Residence Halls, I believe San Rafael and Manzanita village are the only options. From what I have seen the three apartment options are in Isla Vista, while the two residence hall options are closer to campus, but just outside of IV.

For anybody that was a transfer student, how was it living in these places? How are they in relation to everything going on in IV? How is it getting to campus? Did you bring your car?

Also to the future 2010 transfer students, what were your top choices for the housing app? Or are you looking at places outside of school owned ones?

bump! im trying to figure out housing too…

Last year they did not assign any transfer students to any residence halls, so I’m not sure if the same will happen this year.

The undergraduate apartments are not bad, they are not the Ritz, but they are not a total dump either. Santa Ynez is the nicest out of the three. I have never been in Westgate, but it does not look that nice from the outside. Santa Ynez is pretty, but it is less social than El Dolorado. The rooms in the apartments are pretty spacious. The undergrad apts. are good because they allow you to meet other transfers like yourself.

The undergraduate apartments are also good because they are close to the action, but not so close that you can’t study or sleep.

It is really easy to get to IV it is just a 5-10 minute walk to anywhere in IV. People walk/bike to campus;a bike is really handy if you want to get around campus/IV quickly. People have cars, but they use them if they want to get to downtown SB or something, not to get around IV, because you don’t really need one.

thanks for the info, ollieshuvitz are you a transfer student also? what you put down for the preferences on the housing app?

yea i posted for my #1 as SY then 2# Westgate and 3rd ED, but I really would like to get into one of the San Clemente places

I put any residence hall #1, Santa Ynez #2, and El Dorado #3. I’m fine with a residence hall (even though they might not be putting transfers in there) or Santa Ynez, which looked very nice. I don’t want El Dorado or Westgate, those looked kind of rundown.

Does anyone know how to get into San Clemente? I heard it’s for graduate students but they also put transfers in there. Is it for transfers who don’t get into a dorm or apartment or what?

here’s the email I got in response to asking them that question:

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we are not taking request for San Clemente unless you were a non-traditional student (older, vet). If we have spaces open up in the San Clemente Apartments we’ll offer them to our undergraduate contract holders (first to older students, then to honor students).

so there ya go
