I have been thinking about what I want to major in. I am interested in investment banking and recall having seen that you are familiar with this field.

If there any advantage to majoring in Finance versus Economics? Is a double major in econ and math seen favorably by ibank recruiters, and would it be looked down upon when compared to a finance major?

Also, earlier you mentioned leaving investment banking because you no longer liked it. I was wondering, if you don't mind, if you could elaborate on that?

I would major in whatever field you find more interesting. That way, your GPA will be boosted and your chances at IBanks will be enhanced. Obviously, the B-School always gives students an edge because the college is designed to place students and is affiliated to the MBA program which attracts all sorts of employers. But a double major in Math and Economics will be very respected too. However, if you major in Economics and Mathematics, you will have to take the initiative when it comes to finding internships and eventually, a permanent job. Many of my fellow Econ majors got offers from top IBanks upon graduation, so if you take the initiative, it is certainly very likely that you will find a good job. The main thing is to maintain a high GPA. IBanks like top students. I graduated with a 3.4 GPA. Any lower than that would probably disqualify you...so be careful.

I quit the investment banking life for three reasons. One, I did not like the nature of the Investment Banker. I will not give details, but they are a rather pathetic bunch. Two, I did not like working 12-16 hours/day, 6-7 days a week, 51 weeks a year. That's not my thing. Finally, I did not even enjoy the work itself. I find Banking to be devoid of life.

I also have a question for you alexandre....do you know about Michigan revoking admission because its really scaring me. I was accepted to LSA already but im not doing too well senior year and my school automatically sends midyear reports out. I called them up and they said they dont look at midyear reports for accepted students(only final grades)..im in 4/5 AP's and got 4B;s and a C for Q1 and 2b;s2c;s and a D second Quarter...if i raise the D to a C and get 4 B's would i still get in...im sure its good enough but its still scary....so is 4B's and a C for final grades ok even though i usually get straight A;s(cant concentrate senior year)....sooo i need help..THANKS!

If you graduate from High School, your acceptance will not be revoked. Michigan rarely if ever recants. However, if your grades do not improve to the suggested 4 Bs and a C mark, Michigan could give you a warning...or even place you on probation.

My boss' daughter got her admission revoked when she blew off her senior year after acceptance--and that's with my boss working at the University. She was able to get it reinstated, but she had to grovel.

lock12, do your best to get those grades up--and be prepared to address this if Admissions asks. If you are straightforward and accountable then I'd suspect you can get off with the warning.

I also know someone who got their admission rescinded. And yes, they graduated from high school. They ended up commuting from home to a local university. I don't know if they ever got into Umich. I don't remember how bad their grades were, but they weren't bad enough to not graduate. It does happen and 20 out of 5000 isn't bad unless you're one of the 20.
