Question for Alexandre

Hey all fellow UMichers, I would like Alexandre or any other informed peeps :) to compare Northwestern (Accepted today and very excited!!!) and UMich (into Honors program). I think they are similar schools and they are both in the Big 10, major plus!!!!! Also, I would appreciate according to your assessment if they are in the same league of schools according to reputation (which I believe is the case), but I would like some confirmation on this. Also, is there grade inflation/deflation at these places and which one would be easier to attain a higher GPA for med school. Thanks!!!!!!!

Congratulations Dog. Northwestern is an awesome school...and Michigan is just as good. So you have your work cut out for you in deciding which school to go to.

Northwestern has a quater system whereas Michigan has a trimester system. I prefer Michigan's system.

The campuses are both quite nice and functional.

I prefer Ann Arbor to Evanston, but Chicago blows Detroit away! LOL

I would say that Northwestern has a little more grade inflation than Michigan, but the quality of Northwestern's student body is slightly better, so it evens out.

Michigan has more school spirit, but Northwestern is improving in that regard.

For pre-med, I recommend both schools highly. However, Michigan is affilitated to a top 10 Medical school and a top 10 hospital, and it has incredible research offerings even for undergrads, so in that regard, Michigan has the edge.

All in all, you should visit both schools and see which is a better fit. You cannot go wrong either way.

im also facing the same dilemna Northwestern vs Umich (vs god willing some ivys on Thurs lol) ...
im interested in economics/business so whats the practical differences between doing eco at Northwestern and doing undergrad business at Umich (for which its ranked tops) ? cant seem to figure it out cause it seems to me that if there was a difference all schools would offer both..
otherwise i feel NU is better in terms of prestige/job prospects (in finance) but i keep getting pulled back toward Umich cause i feel it has this great spirit and more fun etc... really cant decide... what do you think?

go48, let me help you. Northwestern is not more prestigious than Michigan and it does not have better job placement. If you feel you are a better fit for Michigan, go for Michigan. Michigan is equal to Northwestern in every way.

ok thanks , guess ill have to visit both (btw did u attend both? ) !

can u please explain what the difference is between undergrad business majors and undergrad economics? why dont all schools offer undergrad business but all offer undergrad eco ?
thanks a lot .

also, why wouldnt northwestern be a bit more prestigious being that its so much more selective ?

No, I only went to Michigan, but I got into Northwestern. As for Econ vs Business, Economics is a traditional academic discipline. All universities and LACs offer it. Business is generally limited to few universities. I personally recommend Economics to undergrads.

Finally, selectivity and prestige are not related. Georgetown, Emory, Washington University, Rice etc... are all more selective than Johns Hopkins, Chicago, Cal and Michigan...but they are not more prestigious. Prestige is associated purely with academic excellence.

So can we agree that UMich and Northwestern are equally prestigious in your view Alexandre since you seem to be sooo knowledable in college stuff and academics and all that

Althouh Alexandre is probably right , the rankings seems to indicate otherwise (yes , i know they might be worthless but its the only semi offficial comparison...) ..

also, i think prestige and selectivity go hand in hand . let me explain: if you have a top notch student body, you attract top notch professors and money etc... = prestige .. if you are missing the first part i dont see how you get the rest... ie harvard even with a x billion dollar endownment wouldnt attract the best professors around to come teach kids with 1100 sat's etc...

Go48, Michigan has a larger endowment than Northwestern and Michigan's faculty is actually better than Northwestern. As for the rankings, Michigan gets a higher reputation score. The only reason Michigan is ranked below Northwestern is because Michigan has lower graduation rates, gives out fewer schollies and a smaller ratio of alumns giving money back to the school.

Dog, yes, Michigan and Northwestern are pretty even in terms of prestige and reputation. I would seriously look at fit and nothing else.

I second Alexandre's opinion. I'm an exec with a large multinational and either school would look fantastic on a resume. Five yrs out of school and its irrelevant anyway. Its how you perform on the job!! Do well at either school and you'll have plenty of opportunities. Go with your heart and your gut. You'll do better where you're happier. Prestige, selectivity and rankings are all subjective anyway. You can't quantify down to the gnat's ass, so the difference in ranking between a 10 and a 20 is a marketing tool, nothing else. You can't realistically compare a top LAC and a UM/NW for example. Different roles in the academic world. Either will do just fine.
