Question for Asians

Do you get offended by the stereotypes America reinforces about Asians in the media? For example, the, I think it's Juicy Fruit, commercial that has some Asian store owner speaking in what is supposed to be an angry Asian, "Engrish" accent.

Or do you feel disappointed in the lack of Asians on TV. Sometimes I complain about how there are hardly any Black women on TV and then I remember that Asians, including Indians, have it much worse. And when you are on TV, you are there for comic relief as on MadTv or on Heroes. If not that, then you're the smart nerdy kid in class, the whole genius Asian thing, or the closeted smart stoner/skater/punk rock Asian kid who is the the side kick for the white kid.

Do you feel insulted when people assume that you are shy or not outspoken? Do you feel that there is a lack of Asians in leadership positions, outside of schools, in the government or businesses?

I was wondering, am I, and the rest of America, turning a blind eye from racism towards Asians?

Its the stride gum add and no i'm not really offended. I find it really funny even if my friends are incredulous when I join in laughing. Harold and Kumar are exposure enough for me. Well how is there a lack of asians in leadership positions? I 'll write more later.

I am usually miffed (and occasionally even upset) at Asian stereotypes and how we are portrayed on TV. Personally, I've gone against the stereotype on quite a few different levels (and of course, I fit several stereotypes), but it almost always annoys me when some random non-asian will automatically assume things about me that simply aren't true...

Sometimes thoughts just run through my head when dealing with ignorant people including:

"No, I don't speak Engrish, in fact, my English is much better than yours"
"No, I am not unathletic, I could probably outrun your track 'star' kid"
"No, I don't wear glasses, contacts, and I've never had LASIK, my vision was tested at 20/13"
"No, my tool is not an inch long, just ask your mom" :p

Blind eye for racism towards Asians? Meh... lots of people do that. It's just that Asians are currently "easier" to pick on right now since in general, we are taught to avoid fighting back unless absolutely necessary. Although Asian communnity response to strong or blatant racism is equally strong and unified, such responses are relatively uncommon... partially attributed to the fact that there's no Asian that's as prominent/notorious as people like Al Sharpton :p

However... I absolutely hate hate hate it when Asians complain about things and they start blaming everything on the fact that they're Asian.

If I ever hear "omg, this hispanic guy got into so and so top school and I didn't even though my SAT is 300 points higher and I'm the valedictorian and he barely made top 25% blah blah blah"

or (for asian guys) "I asked so and so attractive girl out and she rejected me because I'm asian so therefore she must think [insert asian stereotypes here]"

...I get really annoyed at those types of complaints.

I really don't care... =

Some stereotypes, I have found, are not all too untrue. The vast majority of teenage, Asian males that I know have spikey hair manga moment and many of the teenage/tween Asians I know watch anime and the like...

Seriously though, EVERY race has to go through this sort of thing. Whites are looked at like 'preps' or 'the man', blacks are 'gangsta', asians are 'nerdy', etc.etc. The nerdy sterotype, in my opinion, is not as demeaning as some other things that are often brought up (whoever asks me if i eat cat or dog next is dead).

There aren't really any stereotypes that apply to whites in general, unlike that for minorities.

The portrayal of blacks have come a LONG way in network television (the same can be said for homosexuals) - the portrayal of Asians, otoh, is still lagging (esp. for the males).

It's actually kinda sad that commercials like this exist today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkQEv-b93ZA

My mom is racist against Asians. It's horrible. We were driving through a COLLEGE CAMPUS and we were lost. There was an Asian lady walking by and I'm like, "Mom, why don't you ask her where X Hall is?" and she's like, "I would, but she probably doesn't speak English". It was a college campus! Gosh >:(

Anyway, I think Disney Channel is the most race-blind channel on TV. Brenda Song is Asian and she plays the snooty, airhead main character on a Disney Channel show (snooty, airhead: exact opposites of the Asian stereotype).

^ Well there is an Asian Girl on the same show that acts like the typical asian girl-Nerdy,Smart,etc. Also i don't think your mom has anything against asian people? She just believes they don't speak english, which is very odd...
I do feel there is a lack of asian leadership in our society today, which i think is very sad. Some stereotypes about asian people are very true. Like alot of them are smart and play piano <--Extremely True or maybe just a fact, btw i am asian. But i hate when people make particular stereotypes-- Asians are all Buddist.

and it's funny that there is a lack of leadership because Asians value education highly in society. What do you all think is the problem?

^

Since when was leadership only about merit or academics? Just look at the White House.

^^^ LMAO!! quality response.

lol this is true but still he went to college, Yale. And though leadership is not only brought on by merit and academics, it is helped a lot by the connections one makes in college.

Asian males do poorly in the dating market, so yeah, that complaining isn't without merit.

no they don't what are you talking about? Indian guys do just fine.

That's exactly the problem: the old boys network that incestuously keeps power in the hands of an undeserving few.

Shy and/or unattractive Asian males do poorly, yes. But Hidetoshi Nakata (Japanese soccer star) dated Milla Jovovich, and Paradorn Srichaphan (Thai tennis player) is marrying a former Miss Universe. What does that tell you? Beautiful women like confident athletic males, no matter what the race.

There was once a time when Black males were seen as stupid and bumbling fools (Stepin Fetchit). Then somebody like Jack Johnson came along, and fast forward 80 years and White guys are cowering under the metaphorical cojones of the big Black stud.

I've always been against the stereotype of cavemen

In all seriousness though, in a white man dominated society, there's always going to be some type of racism, prejudice, and stereotype. I suspect the same for whites in Asia and other countries (the "rich fool" stereotype).

WOW

the number #1 reason why networks don't get more non-stereotypical roles for asians is becuase asians don't cry out. The above posters pretty much were like, it's okay...stereotype me, I am used to it. W the F? If asians cry out, then things will happen. Just look at what happened with JV and the Doghouse..radio show..google it.They called asian women sex objects who needed to be saved by white men, and asian men as losers with eggrolls for d#icks who "cooked flied lice." Many asians cried out, and the show eventually lost funding and was cancelled.

The number two reason why the networks IGNORE the asians is the FAULT OF THE ASIANS THEMSELVES!

I remember networks making fun of hispanics like 15 years ago (the now cancelled Will and Grace, other shows) and protraying them in stereotypical roles.
BUT the hispanics have a ginormous birth rate, like 3 or 4 kids are average per family, the highest for ethnic/cultural groups in the USA. Yes there are illegals but the majority of the population increase is from birth to american-raised hispanics.

SINCE the birth rate is so large, there will be more %-tage of hispanics, and thus the networks will be afraid to protray them as bad/stereotypical since then hispanics will get upset and they don't want to lose the money from them not watching! NOW, hispanics have MUCH better roles.

Out of all the minorities, Asians have the lowest birth rates, statistically. Asians are only 4%, and coupled with the low birth rates makes for a small population. In america, democracy is all about population size. If your population size is small, progress ISN"T GONNA happen, not matter how vocal/activism-ish you are. White people don't dare talk about this since they want to remain the majority. Just watch, in 2050 hispanics will be 46% of california's population and with that percentage nobody will dare to make fun of them in CA media

Asians I know only care about having one kid and getting him into Harvard. Asians are way too materialistic and want to spend money on material c #rap than on another child. BUT in the end the white kid from harvard ends up making more money than the asian kid since the white kid is looked upon more favorably by the population, which is white. (ex: white professor more likely to be friends with a white student than asian student , thus writes the white student a better recommendation letter, thus gets him into a great job) White don't like to network with asians, or any other minority.

IN asian cultures, that is what works: education. But here in america, without a ethnic population to support that sucess, asians, no matter how hard they work will never be as sucessful as the white guy who works just as hard.

Hispanics know the secret, do you?

oh, and, one other thing: American-born asians (30%) marry white guys. The mixed kids, who think they are better than asians and other minorities, check off "white" in the US Census. That lowers population numbers=marginalization by TV networks/society.

Just the facts...

Umm, no. The average Asian male in the US does poorly in reference to other racial groups. Black, Hispanic, White.
It tells me you are making an extremely poor case. Rich, athletic men of any race can get tail. It's how well they get tail relative to each other...
Beautiful women like confident athletic males, no matter what the race.
Yep. But I'd guess, that on average, White, Black, and Hispanic females prefer males of those groups over Asians.

Well, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Asian males will never match Whites or Blacks in the dating market in the US.
