Question for Band Nerds!

<p>Feeling more confident about my son's chances with a number of universities as letters begin to come in... so here's an entirely different realm of 'acceptance' question.</p>

<p>My son is 3rd chair trumpet in a school of 2400 (600 in his class)... he hasn't pursued/attained any type of band recognition outside of his school... he's a good player, but not outstanding, with somewhat limited range.</p>

<p>He really enjoys marching band/orchestra/etc however... and I'm wondering how tough it would be to get onto the marching bands of any of the following schools he is considering:</p>

<p>University of Pittsburgh
University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
Vanderbilt
USC (we saw them practicing on the field... looked pretty intense)</p>

<p>...other schools he is looking at are small enough... I'm not too concerned about his chances to participate in band... as a non-music major.</p>

<p>I have a friend in the USC marching band (southern california i assume)…dunno too much though…just saying…i think at most schools you just sign up, maybe play an informal audition?</p>
