Hi all,
I will transfer Fall 2014, and as you know there are two ways, TAG and UC application...my favorite UC is San Diego.
I wanted to go with Tag, cuz it's more reliable, but for UCSD they need me to finish IGETC by the end of Spring 2014...now my major is Computer Science and even in the website Assist.org it says it's better for Computer and Engineering students not to follow IGETC since we have so many major requirements to finish up...based on that, I took mostly major prep courses these past semesters at my CCC, I will be done with Math and calculus, physics, English and have taken Java, C, C++ and Assembly so far...the only pre-req courses that I won't take before transfer are Data Structure courses...
However, no way I will finish IGETC by the end of Spring 2014! I meet all the other requirements for TAG though...do u guys think I should apply for TAG, and if they really care if I finish IGETC to be considered for TAG?!
or do u think I would get in by UC application?! GPA is 3.6, and have done many courses related to computer science...the only problem is I have not done ANY extracurricular activities in college, because I work outside of the college to provide for myself and family!!! so that's mainly why I wanted to go with TAG cuz they don't care about extra curricular activities with TAG! however after talking to a counselor I figured out I won't be done with IGETC!!!!
Any input would really help! do u think I would get in by filling out UC application? which one do u think I should choose?

UCSD is pretty competitive, so if you know for sure you want to go to UCSD, then try to finish the IGETC. What areas do you still need to finish? Does your CC offer winter session?

Otherwise I say try to do some extra-curricular activities and maintain your GPA (it’s competitive already) and try the non-TAG UC app route.

I have a lot to do for IGETC…foreign language, math, english and physical and biological science is done by the end of fall2013, but only took Economic in other areas such social science and arts and humanities! I’m not sure how some computer science students in CCC could complete all IGETC and Major prep in Assist.org at the same time! it would be around 80 units overall!
I even see completing IGETC pointless, those courses has nothing to do with my major!
I am 3.5 now but I’m sure I can get my GPA to 3.65 by spring 2014!! is it really that low for ucsd?!lol

IGETC will fulfill the general education requirements at four of UCSD’s six colleges, but if you enter Revelle or Roosevelt, IGETC will not automatically cover all of the general education requirements.

If you do not have IGETC completed by transfer, you will have to complete the general education requirements of whichever UCSD college you transfer to (if you transfer to UCSD):

I see what u mean, but I’d like to keep some GE for when I’m taking all those hard upper division courses…same way the UCSD Warren college has it in its four year plan!
beside that it’s kinda late, Fall13 starts tmrw, and I have already taken the courses I needed(discreet math, physics, C++), and I have only winter and spring to complete IGETC which is not enough…do I have any chance to get in via uc application?!

I’m an incoming transfer for the fall quarter at UCSD and I completed IGETC along with the math, some of the physics, and a little bit of the CS requirements. Are you planning to tag? As far as I know if you tag UCSD then they will not reject you. I’m a computer science major and i finished my IGETC and tagged UCSD. I got rejected from UCLA, UCI, and UCSB for computer science, but was accepted by UCSD. So, I think your best chance is to try your best to finish IGETC and tag UCSD. Goodluck!

Jboy92, what was your gpa and what was the farthest math you completed before applying? I’m a comp sci major as well and planning to apply for fall 2014

Jboy92, I’m also curious. UCSD is my first choice, but I’m not quite at the TAG GPA (I’m at a 3.5 and UCSD TAG needs a 3.5 by end of Fall). What was our GPA? and did you miss any prereqs?

jboy92: I don’t think I go with TAG, I won’t finish IGETC, I have like 9 courses in order to finish IGETC and I have only a winter and spring left!! I wish I have found out about TAG sooner than this! I guess I will sign up in a few clubs to get some ECs done and hope for the best…my GPA by end of fall will be 3.6, and my 6 recent courses are all A! I hope it’d be something they consider!

@bhav&jn26: I see my rivals here lol, we should make a thread for Fall2014 transfer students!

Correction: I’m at a 3.45 GPA, but I need a 3.5 for UCSD TAG.

@bolandgoo, haha yup, rivals. I’ll be done with IGETC, but I need to get really good grades this Fall to raise by 3.45 to >3.5, so I’m hoping I get 3 A’s and 1 B at the very least (I checked, and this is what I must get this Fall at the very least to have a 3.5 GPA by the end of Fall). I’m hoping I get 3 A’s and 1 B at the very least or else TAG fails!

I’m already over TAG for UCSD, no way I finish IGETC!
will save it for Irvine or Santa Barbara…I think I will get into Irvine anyway, so will TAG myself to UCSB, and fill out UC application to Irvine and SD and one CSU!(not sure which one is better for CS major)
my GPA is 3.6 for sure by the end of fall, but I do not have a single EC lol…I need to sign up in some clubs asap! plus I have not taken my critical thinking course…I wonder how much it’ll affect getting into UCs!! I was saving it for Spring…shame I learned all this so late!

ECs only matter at UCB and maybe UCLA. For every other UC the two most important things are GPA and completion of prerequisites. I also work outside school, and when I applied for Fall 2013 I had no ECs whatsoever. My GPA was 3.7 GPA (3.75 UC transferable), my major is Computer Engineering. I got in UCI, UCD and UCSB. The only place that rejected me was Berkeley, which was expected.
I would suggest that you focus on GPA and completing the required prereqs. You should also try to complete as many strongly recommended classes as you can. At UCSB, they have an unwritten rule that incoming College of Engineering transfers MUST have at least 2 strongly recommended courses done.

Kazyaa, seems like your situation was kinda like mine(no EC, GPA etc). wish u had applied for UCSD lol, that’s where I want to end up!
but hey I wanna TAG UCSB, how’s the computer science over there?!
the only thing that I don’t like about UCSB is that it’s a party school(or at least famous about it)…I’m not really into partying and stuff!

It is also an outstanding research1 university. It is highly ranked pretty much in every ranking.
They don’t party in the school. Parties are usually held in IV - the student town near UCSB.
Nobody will make you party.
Computer Science and College of Engineering in general are world class.

lol ok…UCSB is one of my picks among UCSD, UCI and UCB…I’m in LA but don’t wanna go to UCLA even if I get accepted…for many reasons!lol
UCB would be really hard to get in for me, but I have done many pre-req - major prep courses and also I think they might like my Personal Letter…

3.6 is a competitive GPA for UCSD, so you’ll have a good shot at UCSD without TAG

I hope so…I’ll reach that by the end of fall, no way I’m going to get a B in physics, discreet math and assembly language this semester!

Yah, I have to do well also. I currently have a 3.45, but I’m trying to get the 3.5 by the end of Fall for UCSD TAG. I have to get 3 A’s and 1 B at the very least; it’s scary. (taking first sem chem lab – yah, I’m taking the chem route, so I won’t even have a chance at UCLA or UCSB = I decided that a while back though since securing an A in chem class is more likely than an A in calculus based physics and I find UCSD a great school anyways). I’m also taking Java data structures, and 2 General Eds (for IGETC) ).

The 2 GE’s should be chill for the A, but I have to make sure that chem and java are either A & A or A & B, but not B & B

Man I hate Chem, I already had one Calc- based physics and got A lol, this is my second one, electromagnetic and stuff!
Assist does say we need to take some pre-req, but I don’t think taking them ALL is necessary…like who would finish UCLA and Cal requirement in 2 years(or even 3 years) anyway?! Chem, phys, math, computer…it’s stupid…but UCSD has a reasonable amount of pre-req to finish in CC!
I have saved Java Data Structure, calc 3 and Critical thinking for spring!
those are the hardest, but not sure my grades would really matter at that point, we know if we got into or not at that point
