Question for Current Columbia Students

How do you feel about Columbia's campus in comparison to other, larger campuses? (Think the difference between Columbia's and Princeton's, or something). Is the smaller campus size ever annoying? The lack of green? Also, what's it like to be in the middle of the city all the time versus being in a more secluded college campus?

Thanks in advance. Any thoughts appreciated.

personally i love the campus. its secluded from the rest of the city so you feel like its your own little place but all you have to do is step out of the gates to be a quick ride away from anywhere in new york

i also LOVE that everything is so close. from the farthest points on campus its max...9 blocks? something like that....if you're going to go to school in the north, having a shorter walk to class is an awesome thing.

could probably write more but kinda sick atm, maybe later

Parent here, rather than current student, but since most of them are away on Spring Break, I'll just ditto what Skraylor said on behalf of my son. He has told me he loves the compactness of the campus. He likes being in NYC, but enjoys the sense that whenever he doesn't feel like dealing with the city he has a campus to retreat to, unlike some of the other urban colleges. He likes the fact he runs into people he knows all the time and that he can roll out of bed and be in class in a matter of 10 or 15 minutes. But then, he had no interest in Princeton, and specifically wanted to go to an urban school.

and it's not like there's no green stuff anywhere. there's south lawn, and the upper campus has a bunch of trees and secluded areas. there are really big parks a block to either side. it's very much a bubble in the middle of new york city.

Columbia's campus is the fantastic.

sometimes i still feel that walking from 114th street to 120th street is ALOT in the morning.....but I think i would hate having to trek for 20 minutes to get to class like my buddies at cornell. The small campus is great, its very easy to run into people on campus which surprisingly makes it alot like HS...if you will....granted you will also run into some people you dont want to see but u take the good with the bad. Though the campus is not in the best part of NYC, it is very accessible by subway.

How long does it take to get familiar with the city? Is NYC so big that it'll take months, a year?

I have lived in NYc my whole life and im still not familiar with it. but then again i live in queens, not manhattan

The campus is great and the neighborhood isn't a DMZ, like New Haven.
