Hi! I'm a prospective transfer student planning to transfer as a chemical engineering major to either UC Santa Barbara or Cal Poly Pomona.

I know that most of the upper division courses for engineering majors are sequential and are only offered during specific quarters. I have looked into both the schools' catalogs and they do not offer upper division chemical engineering courses during the summer.

Is it possible to finish all the required classes within 2 years? How does that work? Do they allow taking two classes at the same time if the other one is a prerequisite to the other? For example, taking Intro to ChemE and ChemE Thermodynamics at the same time?

If one is a pre-req to the other then no they don’t let you take them in one quarter/semester. UCs are pretty strict about it.

I am an engineering student and I have tons of friends who are engineering majors at different UCs. Almost every one of them is bound to spend 2+ years. I myself wanted to finish my major in 2 years when I transfer and there is no way in hell I can do that unless I take 5-6 classes per quarter. That being said, take it easy and don’t go too hard on yourself.

If your preferred class in not offered this summer then wait until the next summer catalog comes. See if they’re offering any class that you have to take in the future and then rearrange your classes and see if that get rids of the problem.
