Question for Current Fordham Students

I understand that finals for the fall term 2010 will be held between Dec.15-22.
I am an international student who will be booking a cheap international flight back home for christmas break .
There will be a heavy penalty charge if I want to change my return flight once booked.
Before I book my return flight,How likely is it that I can have a final exam put on the last exam day,say dec -22nd ?
will most of the finals done by 22- dec. according to your experience in Fordham ?

Good question. The simple answer is it varies by course and professor and if you are a freshman or upperclassman. Professors are not supposed to substitute papers for final exams but it happens in upper division courses sometimes. Freshmen almost without exception will have exams and they are scheduled according to the Dean in the College (FCLC, FCRH or CBA). My D has had exams finish days early and has also had exams on the last exam day and one time late on the last exam day. You won’t really know until the professor tells you either in the syllabus for the course or sometime during the semester.

My advice, DONT BOOK the flight until you know for certain. But if you are currently booking a return flight to Turkey to head home for the holidays in December, I would use an abundance of caution and not book anything except a late evening flight from JFK on the 22nd as it is entirely possible you might have an exam on that day. Sometimes professors will let you take it early for exceptional circumstances but that is uncommon.

In truth, its the same problem students have domestically here as well. Yes its a pain. And yes, it may mean you have an extra day of do nothing until your flight departs, if you finish exams early. But if you book an early am flight on the 22nd, you run the risk of a conflict that could put you in a jam. Thankfullly many return trans Atlantic flights to Europe or other places leave in the evening anyway, often quite late. The RamVan can transport you from Fordham’s campuses to JFK or LaGuardia.

Again, in short, it really varies from course to course and semester to semester. There is not one simple answer. Ditto for moving out and leaving at the end of the year. Some kids get done early and some kids are taking exams unitil the last hour on the last day.

Will the airline give you an open ended return flight, so you can get a lower R/T fare but just leave the reservation open until you know for certain?
Good luck.

The final exam schedule usually comes out during the semester. It looks like the last final is on December 22nd but you may or may not have an exam that day. All finals should be completed by late afternoon on that day.

You may want to check with ResLife to see what date the dorms are open until as well.
Unfortunately this will make planning in advance difficult for you unless you just arrange to stay until the last exam is over.

This was the exam schedule for last fall, and I doubt they’ll make any major changes to it this semester. My suggestion is to schedule your flight in September, when you know your classes and what times they meet. Remember, though, to look at it based on what number day it is, and not day of the week. Finals were the 15th-22nd last year too, but it started on a Tuesday. This year it starts on a Wednesday.

Hope this helps, and hopefully they don’t change it!
