Question for current Rice/Baylor Students

How many of the students in the combined program were offered scholarship to Rice itself, and do you think that getting a merit scholarship in the early and interim rounds is a determinant of success getting into the 8 year program? just wondering, i indicated interest on the Rice application and they sent me a Rice/BMC application with the acceptance package, but i'm not really sure if i'm a) fully sold on doing medicine or b) good enough to get in the 8 year program since i wasn't offered any merit aid, except for the nat'l merit finalist stuff i'd get if i got in.

If you're not fully sold on doing medicine--this is not the path for you. I do hope you realize this. You can choose to go into medicine at any point in your life. However, there are kids out there that have spent THOUSANDS of hours in the field and are passionately dedicated to medicine. The Rice-Baylor program is for them...not those who have even the slightest flicker of a doubt.

Also keep in mind there are many medically-related fields that you don't need the R-B path for. Consider medical product development such as medication. You can go into this for the PhD ...you dont need the MD. Is this clear? Or perhaps try out biomedical engineering.

i was anticipating this response. your points are very clear, and i was leaning against not applying anyway because i'm not sold on medicine and realize there are so many things out there for me to discover during my undergraduate years even if i do choose to follow a pre-med track. i do also realize that Rice students can enjoy these aspects aside from pre-med, but are obviously very driven on medicine as their future, and i dont think i am at that level yet. but i was just wondering, for fact and curiosity's sake since this came in the mail, whether R-B students may be pre-selected in the beginning by virtue of the fact that they received Rice's best merit scholarships. i'm sure that the committee looks at extra medical related community service aside from what Rice looks for, but considering the competitiveness of the program, I can't help to wonder if there is a correlation between who receives merit scholarships and who gets into the highly selective Rice Baylor program. thank you all in advance for responses.

i'm applying for Rice/Baylor and I am absolutely certain that I want to be a doctor
as for the correlation between merit scholarships and Rice/Baylor acceptance, i don't think there is one because I have read in a bunch of other threads that after you get accepted at Rice, your essays and your interview matter the most
It is true that a majority of Rice/Baylor people get merit scholarships but I have seen people that didn't recieve any merit aid get it too
I really want Rice/Baylor so badly but I am skeptical of my chances

There isn't a correlation in the case of my year (2010), I don't think. Some of us got merit scholarships and some didn't.
