Question for current students - Advisors

For those of you who have attended WPI for more than a year.

How often are you expected to meet with you Major advisor? And how often are you encouraged to meet with him/her? Do any of you find the advisor to take on the position of mentor or do you look for that elsewhere, and if so, where?

WPI students are assigned a major advisor once they declare their major, typically in the second half of their freshman year. Before that, all the members of the freshman floor have a common advisor who is not major-specific.

There is a specific day set aside as an advising day in which no classes take place when it would be very wise to meet with your advisor. Otherwise, I have found my advisor open to meet with me whenever I wanted to discuss anything with him. Academic advising at WPI is generally very good although your mileage may vary depending on who is your advisor. Obviously some faculty are not very good advisors and may even consider you as a waste of their time. You can of course discuss academic and other matters to other faculty who you are comfortable with as well.

My advisor is my mentor and I have had him for a class as well. He is a very experienced expert in electrical engineering (one of the most distinguished in his field) and he has high expectations of academics and ethics for all his students and truly loves his students. He is truly a phenomenal professor and advisor.

you are a lucky dude :-)
