Question for current students: bikes?

So I want to bring my bike to UNC but I don't want to leave it out in the elements year around. Is there indoor storage available? Is there a bike shed or lockup somewhere? I am looking for something other than the rack outside the dorm. Is this a place where I can safely take a "good" bike?

The racks are all that are really available. Some students bring them into their dorm rooms but that would take up a lot of space.

So is it a good idea for me to bring a bike? I’m from the city so I am used to just taking the metro and walking everywhere lol.

Yes - bring your bike - UNC CH is a great biking campus - there are tons of off road trails around campus, you can bike to Carrboro which is the town next to Chapel Hill, the weather is great most of the time too and there are a number of bike paths for students who live off campus. No metro in Chapel Hill but there is bus service. I would check with which ever dorm you live in - there might be some sort of covered place for locking up your bike. Or take it into your room.

I definitely recommend bringing a bike. Like fatpony said the area is really bikeable (although a bit on the hilly side). As far as bringing a nice bike, that is a harder call. Bikes do get stolen, but for the most part they are bikes that aren’t locked up. If you have a good lock and lock it up in well lit areas or with lots of other bikes, you shouldn’t have a problem. And again, keeping it in your room is one more option.

I’ve seen people but bikes in the stairwells, but that’s probably frowned upon.

So are there no bike sheds (protected lockups) available for students? Some campuses have them near the dorms for storage through the colder months. Some have many of them as regular lock up places.

^ Not that I know of

Thanks, All!
