So we went to admitted students day, and overall really liked the “vibe” at Pitt. However, we are wondering about the food options for vegan students. She, my daughter, is sorta worried might not be enough variety, including vegan protein items, ability to have a balanced meals. We did eat at Market Central for lunch, but the vegetarian/vegan station didn’t seem to offer a full balanced meal, and also wondering is that the only option via the meal plan? Wondering if we just missed some options as it was very busy at lunch. Since paying a lot for the meal plan, wondering what/where she will be able to eat on it. Could she get tofu scramble for breakfast, etc,
Now, we loved Eat Unique’s two vegan burgers, and actual went there twice. And, we went to Eden’s in Shadyside for dinner… that was great. But, she won’t have a car, and again trying to figure out how to get money’s worth out of meal plan - as can’t opt out of that as freshman and can’t eat at expensive restaurants every day.
Finally, dos anyone know what percent of freshman live in Towers vs other dorms? She is debating whether to write the essay for Sutherland as she did get in honors college, but I think she likes lower campus better. We forgot to ask how freshman are spread among the dorms, etc. and chances for getting dorm requested.
Perch (in Sutherland) has some vegan options (always a vegan pizza apparently too). My son lives in Sutherland and loves it. He’s in Pennsylvania next fall (dorm just next door and slightly down the hill but still upper campus.) The kids in Sutherland seem to like it. And the hike up the hill probably helps keep that freshman 15 at bay. Iirc, Sutherland is freshman only. I’ve heard that Towers is chock full of freshmen too.
Meal plans are good at all on campus dining places.
We picked a mid-price plan and he ended up dropping down a tier for next fall. He never used all of his swipes or dining dollars, which is all rather a waste. He has a fridge in his dorm and probably only eats in the cafeteria 2x/day.
Can’t be too much help, but my cousin is a vegetarian and started attending Pitt last year. Over the holidays I asked about the overall experience, and she did not mention any problems with the food/finding suitable options. Although limited, like most places, I’m sure there are enough options to keep variety on a weekly basis.
Most freshmen are either in Towers A and B, Nordenberg, Holland. There is also freshmen nursing LLC in Lothrop, engineering LLC in Forbes, business LLC in Bruce, and honors LLC in Sutherland.
There are several more LLCs but I don’t know which dorm they are in.
