Question for current Yale students

Sorry....this is going to sound really paranoid (and I guess it is). But anyway, here goes:

Has everyone at Yale done something really spectacular? I mean cancer research, engineering internships, playing solo at Carnegie Hall, etc.

I know that everyone there must be outstanding in their own way, but is everyone a super-competitive candidate with really incredible stuff under their belts?

...I'm feeling inadequate...
:(

not EVEN. haha. a ton of us EA kids have that feeling. the "why me?! why am I here!?" thing. i didn't do anything huge. i took tests well. i wrote decent essays. my parents didnt even go to college. a couple of my friends did research, nothing huge. i think it all comes down to passion and potential while you're here.

I know what you mean, Gorbachev. I feel the same way! There are so many brilliant people on CC applying to top Ivies, that I begin to wonder whether I really stand a chance. I havn't done research, won national level awards, or anything of the sort. If I get through EA then I'm sure it'll be because of one of my teacher recs. [I got to read it :)]. But my supplemental essay wasn't too great, so I'm nervous. Oh well, guess we'll know on the 15th 5.pm. Good luck :)

Ooo, question for edmYale09. I was wondering if you're currently a freshman at Yale. If so, do you by any chance know an Ethiopian student by the name of Hilina Tsehay? ...Just wondering.

Ive done some respected research within my field of biology/zoology but nothing huge like "omfg cured cancer"

the most like, scientific thing i did was submit a research abstract on neural receptors. but like bobbobob said, nothing AMAZING such as meeting the president for some great invention i made.

Whoa.....any high schooler who has "done respected research" has done something pretty incredible, I think.

yea well when you do research for nearly 4 years on the same subject, you tend to gain a better insight into it than even some of the self proclaimed experts.

Im very happy because my paper is so close to getting accepted for publication in a HUGE science magazine...just hope i dont get rejected so I can add that if I get deferred.

yukster- it is a small, small world. my roommate is friends with her suitemate, hayley. hayley was just in my room today! and i know her other suitemate vivian, too. vivian's a chicagoan like me! small, small world.

vivian...

i know her.

SMALLER WORLD! how so?

weird ass connection through the internet.

i hope there arent more than one Vivians from Chicago at Yale.

While we're on the topics of small worlds, edmYale09, what college are you in? I'm wondering because I have a friend who's a freshman in JE, Jonathan Hartman.

Gorbie:
I know a bunch of kids from NY who are at Yale now, and to be frank, some of them are fools. Just plain idiots. One guy from my school got in based solely on who his dad is and how much he makes and donates, and he was quite the blunt crayon, if you know what I mean. Also when I visited my friend this fall, her suitemates were all very nice, and I'm sure very intelligent and impressive, but very down to earth. Don't be intimidated by anyone, the admissions officers know what they're doing when they accept/deny someone. Except for some developmental cases and athletic recruits. Some of those kids are just plain dumb. LOL. :)

I'm in Pierson College. The best effin' Georgian college on campus. also, rich, legacy, NY kids are awesome. i friggin' love my suitemate.

Of course they're wonderful. That's why I'm so charming. ;)

How did you guys even get the opportunity to do your own medical research? I've done some investigation, but I can't find a hospital or a lab that will sponsor me.
I did do a pretty neat project this year on negative theology in Madhyamika Buddhism and Jewish mysticism....all kinds of really obscure primary sources and stuff....but it's nothing like doing experiments on neural receptors. Might be able to publish it, though, and I submitted an abstract.

EdmYale09, that is so cool!! I'm good friends with Hilina. She was in my school last year. Lucky girl applied only to Yale, Harvard, and Stanford, and got accepted (on a scholarship) to all three! :).

rhapsodynshadow -

I'm in JE and I'm friends w Jonathan Hartman - he lives a floor below me - in fact, we just went out to celebrate his birthday..its really is a small world

As for the topic of this post, please don't lose hope! A normal (sort of) kid can get into Yale. I mean I never did any research or met any presidents. I really didn't have much of anything too outstanding besides academics and maybe a good essay and recs. I didn't do sports or play in concert halls or anything. I had a good balance of stuff and hopefully the admissions office was able to see it. I also got deferred in the early round but accepted to everywhere I applied in regular. You will end up somewhere nice, I assure you.

elina, edgar - you guys need to get off this website. don't you have finals to take? orgo is on friday, right? go study!
