Has anyone ever transfered to UCLA LS without the Biology lab component? I got a pretty disheartening email not so long ago from UCLA admissions about how not having lab done could possibly hurt my chances for admissions. I am a UC-UC intercampus transfer, making it that much more difficult....I go to UC Irvine and until recently, there was one lower division lab course that was part of the Bio core, Bio100L. They no longer offering it for whatever reason. I don't think it was actually like a lab, more like a techniques/scientific writing course. Anyway, because of this, I will absolutely have no bio lab done at all....I can't sign up for any upper division bio labs which is all UCI has....at least not until the summer.
There's a small chance that I could do the lab at a local community college....but it's not really feasible in my position. IVC is rather far from UCI for a student with no car. Should I just explain my situation in the Additional Comments section of the app?

Apply and hope for the best. The rules for UC to UC transfer are really not clearly defined. I doubt other UC to UC transfer for UCLA biology took at year of bio lab before they transferred. Most UC’s lower division biology don’t even have an associated lab with the class.

Even UCI, requires transfer to take a 1 year of bio lab before they transfer even though the lab is not offered for those lower division classes… Honestly it is just an assist.org rule. When the admissions get a question about transferring, they usually are like us and go to assist.org to answer your question.

You could try to take biochem lab, molecular bio lab, and liminology lab for winter/spring. However, bio 100 is a pre req now… What I find ridiculous is that you need 93-99 just to take bio 100.

^Yeah that’s the problem. I basically won’t have access to any labs until I get into my 3rd year…

My dilemma is though, UCLA specifically mentioned IVC as a possibility…however, it’s not very possible for me…I dunno if I should use Additional Comments or not. It is ridiculous though now that I think about it…how UCI doesn’t have any lower division labs. :/

You can apply for biochemistry instead.

Um…then we go right back to the problem I had a while back…I will definitely not have 1.5 years of Calc…I won’t have Physics at all…and it still needs bio lab? @_@

Do you know if they will count Bio199 as lab?

3 quarters of math for 3 quarters of math (2A, 2B, 2D)

LS2, LS3, LS4 = 93, 99, 97

Key Difference: Biochemistry does not say anything about the minimum amount of pre-reqs you have to complete.

While biology says this:

That means if you don’t have the list above you will be auto-rejected.

With biochemistry, you won’t be auto-rejected.
It doesn’t really say you need ONE YEAR OF THIS or ONE YEAR OF THAT on the biochemistry major. It just lists what courses transfer for the major and doesn’t have a required minimum.

I don’t know if this is a way out but you could go for it… Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about the BIO LAB requirement for the biology major. There are definitely UCI to UCLA biology transfers out there. It is not like it hasn’t happen before.

I think you are good on the bio requirement as long as you took the same course at UCI. So genetics for genetic, mol bio for mol bio, cell bio for cell bio, etc.

Also I would say UCI has it a lot easier than other UC’s for transferring because the name of the bio classes align so much. You won’t really get that at other UC’s.

The lab requirement is really for transfers from community college.

It will hurt the OP’s chances I’m afraid, however I think you’re better off applying life science anyway. Biochemistry is impacted so without the OP finishing their prereqs he will still have lower chances. In my opinion, missing lab > missing 2 or 3 classes.

OP I would definitely try and do lab at IVC or Saddleback or somewhere close by if you can.

Yeah, I hope that’s the case. The question I emailed UCLA with was whether or not my application will be considered, and they said it will. They just said it could hurt my chances if I don’t have lab. I would try IVC but I don’t have a car and I’m doubtful I will actually get the class. It’s just not a practical situation and I would like to include this in my Additional Comments if appropriate. I don’t want to major in Biochem anyway and I’ll be fine if rejected.

I’m trying to get into Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology, not Biology in general. Lab aside, the only thing I’m really missing is going to be Physics. I will have the recommended extra semester of Ochem done though…I might be missing Gchem too if they don’t count AP credit for prerequisites. =/ I went Chem1B-1C without taking 1A. It’s all really confusing at this point…but thank you all for your help!

there’s a bus that goes from UCI to IVC and the labs shouldn’t be everyday.

I’ll see what I can do, but the bottom line is, I’m not sure I can get into the class…at a time compatible with my regular UCI schedule. It all depends. I’ll try my best though.

My only issue is, I don’t want to go through all the stress of having 2 extra hours of a lab I don’t really need per week–possibly overloading myself and ruining my UCI GPA–and then getting a rejection. I know there’s a bus system and everything but from what I can gather, it’ll take almost 2 hours round trip to go to IVC and back. 2 hours of lab plus 2 hours of transport time per week doesn’t sound like much, but it could affect me. I really want to try my hand at doing some research this Winter Quarter on top of my normal courseload (likely to include Biochem, Ochem/the killer lab, and Psych). I know myself enough to realize that will be quite overwhelming. If I don’t get a research position, I’ll most definitely look into the IVC option.

In the end, even after doing this extra lab and increasing my chances of getting into UCLA, I’m not brazen enough to believe that I will get in without fail. I have a decent GPA. I will have most pre-reqs done, but I am nonetheless still an intercampus transfer. They could reject me for that alone, essays, not enough EC’s, fall quarter grades, ect. and I will have sacrificed a lot of time and energy. I know I sound really whiny or w/e, but I don’t want you to think that UCLA isn’t worth my time. I’m just not a community college student who’s goal is pretty much to transfer. It would certainly be a dream come true and a financial relief…I just have to prioritize and be careful before making this decision. But thank you for helping anyway! I really appreciate. For the purpose of this thread let’s just pretend that IVC isn’t really an option. I would like to know if anyone has ever been in a similar position (gotten in Bio but with no lab). When I first planned my transfer during my freshman year, I believed that I would be able to take Bio100L during my Sophomore year. I did not know or expect that UCI would be cutting out Bio100L altogether…and this is the basis for me not satisfying the lab element of Bio. I just want to know if this is a valid reason for not having lab done, or will they uphold my application to the standards of past UCI->UCLA transfer…it really does make it very difficult.

So, I contacted UCLA yesterday…and they flat out told me that to be admitted, it is important that I have the lab done…I did apply for IVC right after…but it’s obviously not happening. I got a horribly late registration window and the class I was planning to take doesn’t even transfer as I later found (by checking IVC and UCLA’s assist articulation). I looked up Winter intersession for Saddleback, Glendale, East LA, PCC…there’s no chance. I even asked if Bio199 (undergrad research) would be accepted as lab…nope.

Honestly, this process has been a bit draining…I always had an attitude of “oh well, if I don’t make it, I’ll still be at a great school!” but now that I’ve dedicated time to it…it kind of crushes me. It only hurts because…I’ve mislead myself and I should’ve researched this in advanced. I’m not sure if I still want to submit my application. I feel like I’ve got some great statements that I’m proud of…but I’m not sure I could take a rejection on the basis that I did not finish a single lab. I thought I had it all planned out, that this lab would be done in spring but I should’ve made sure… I found out too late that UCI removed the lab for this academic year…

Anyway, thanks to everyone who tried to help! I really appreciate it, especially when intercampus transfer info is so hard to find. This is pretty much going to be last thread on the subject, sorry for spamming the board with all these intercampus questions. I’ve decided not to dwell on this any longer…since in the past few weeks, I’ve been obsessed with this board and transferring…and it’s starting to affect my study habits. If anyone needs help in the future, just ask. I think I’m a bit more learned on the process now that I’ve been through it. Good luck transfers!
