Question for Medill students/potential students

i've been accepted to medill, which is awesome, but i'm not 100% sure that i want to be a journalist...anyone have any advice? or does anyone know how easy it would be to double major at medill (with another major in weinberg, i guess) or to switch to the college in the first couple of quarters?

I heard its easy to cross into different schools. Besides, our undergrad is gonna be vague..if u go on to graduate schoool for journalism it will be much more intense. and note to all journalism majors...well...I just received a scholarship for my work in journalism from Al Neuharth..founder of USA Today and we went to a conference in DC and top journalists including Helen Thomas and Judy Woodruff said DONT major in journalism. Publications look for people with expertise in a certain area. Like if you major in politcal science and take a few journalism course...you will be much more appealing than a journalism major that doesnt have a concentration in a certain subject, and thus, when u pick your beat it will be much better and u will be more credible. but that's just the conclusion i came to in not deciding to go for Medill and opting for Weinberg instead.

what about double majoring - for example, history or political science at weinberg and journalism at medill?

I think that would be do-able. I mean, what else are you going to double major in at Medill?

Lots of people double major in Medill and polisci or Medill and history. It's very easy. If Medill ends up not being so great you can go another direction. Just decide in time to make sure distros etc. can be fulfilled. But this is not the kind of thing that takes until winter quarter senior year to figure out.

hey Ineedhelp...

I'm a freshman at Medill right now and am definitely in the same boat as you. I came to Medill b/c I loved journalism but really didn't think i wanted to be a journalist.

It's true--they make it SO easy for you to double major w/in weinberg. I myself thought about poli sci but then decided on a spanish double major. plus the medill reputation is great for law school, for instance.

Transferring schools? Easy. Piece of cake. It's very easy to transfer out of a specialty school such as Medill into Weinberg but not as easy to transfer vice versa. So you would be fine to transfer out if you decided it wasn't the place for you..

Good luck w/ your decision! Please msg me if you have any questions!
