question for science majors (bio,chem)

hey

I wanted to ask all the science majors what did your schedule for fall and springs look like?

did you guys transfer in 2 years?

did you have to take 2 science classes every semester?

thanks in advance if anyone replys:)

For bio if you want to finish in 4 years than you should be taking 2 every semester unless you load up your summers but it also depends on the school. UCSD, UCSB, UCB require only 2 lower-div bio courses. UCLA and UCI require 1 1/2-2 years of bio. So not exactly 2 every semester. But you can finish physics if your done with your bio requirement early. Don’t forget on top of that your english, GE’s, and math requirement.

But you don’t have to finish all the pre-reqs TO GET in. Just a good number of them. Finishing in 4 years is a different story.

For chem you should try to finish all your pre-reqs if you want finish in 4 years. The math/physics are important because most chem majors take physical chem their junior year and they are pre-reqs to to take them.

Its not as bad you think it is. People over exaggerate about it. Its the typical schedule for a UC student. Look at the sample curriculums. I did 2 semesters of bio/chem/physics + more and got straight A’s. I wasn’t the 4.0 student in high school either. Just put in the work and you will get the grade you deserve. Good luck.

Are you going to be a science major? If you’re not willing to take 2 science classes per semester, then science isn’t for you.

itransfer: thanks for all the advice…did you finish everything in two years? did u also finish O-chem and physics before you transfered? and what is a sample curriculum?

whoshuu: yes I a first year science major and i plan on taking two science classes next semester hopefully. I was just asking because I talk to the davis rep and he said
MOST ppl finish all there pre reqs in 3 years

I don’t think it’s that bad. I’m taking 3 science classes plus a math class (I don’t know if math is science) this semester.

Yea finished it in 2 years I did but wouldn’t recommend it. I say save physics for after you transfer unless your school doesn’t have all equivalent courses in bio. Concentrate on bio, chem, math, english, and GE’s. The UC’s provide sample curriculum that map out a student’s typical 4 years? Most of them are the same. Usually finishing lower div bio, g- chem, o-chem + writing/GE for their first two years.

Bio major here, it’s not likely I’ll be able to transfer in 2 years (in my 2nd year right now)

I’m taking Physics I and Ochem I right now along with History and Pre-Calc (this is messing me up). I should be taking Calculus but whatever.

I won’t be able to finish the Bio requirement by Spring 2010. My school is ■■■■■■■■ and breaks up the Bio requirement into like 4 different classes instead of just two. I had to take an Intro Bio class in order to take General Biology I, which I haven’t even taken yet. I took Genetics last spring but it wasn’t until the summer that I realized the class was useless and did nothing to help me for transferring. So I still need ALL of my bio requirement. Spring 2010 I’ll have General Bio I done but I won’t have General Bio II done (at my school this consists of like THREE different courses). So yeah I’ll be stuck at CC for another year to finish up my Bio, Calculus, and a few elective classes.

On the bright side I’ll have everything knocked out and just have to take my upper division courses once I transfer, won’t have to worry about a single lower division class. Also I can probably take a bunch of summer courses after I transfer so I might still be able to finish in 4 years.

I wud just apply this year. You will probably make it in. Just try it. Oh how are you taking physics without calculus? Are you sure you taking the right type of physics? Check assist.org to make sure.

I’m a biochemistry major. Graduated high school in 2008 and I’m applying this fall for admission in Fall 2010.

Here’s my schedule:

Summer 2008

 • English 1A
 • Calculus II

Fall 2008

 • Public Speaking
 • Calculus III
 • General Chemistry I
 • Physics I

Spring 2009

 • Statistics
 • Sociology
 • English 1C
 • General Chemistry II

Summer 2009

 • English 1B
 • Linear Algebra
 • Anthropology

Fall 2009

 • Biology I
 • Organic Chemistry I
 • Differential Equations

Spring 2010 (planned)

 • Music 101
 • Biology II
 • Organic Chemistry II
 • Physics II
 • Anatomy

I was planning on taking Anatomy in the fall of 2009 but the registration competition was fierce D: So yeah. My spring semester looks overloaded but music is a breeze and physics II shouldn’t be too bad since i kinda took it already in spring 2009 but dropped it a month before finals. (I dropped it not b/c I was failing but because I didn’t want a C)

Btw, I only took linear algebra, differential equations, and English 1B because UC Berkeley wants it for chemical biology majors. Also, Anatomy, Anthropology, and Statistics were additional courses I took to clear pre-requisities for applying to pharmacy school.

Sooo yup. I noticed that lots of my classmates are older than I am though so they took longer than 2 years.

My friend’s a bio major (molecular biology or something for UC Davis) and her fall 09/spring 2010 schedule looks like this:

 • Biology I/II
 • O-Chem I/II
 • Physics I/II

I don’t think you really need to take physics before you transfer to a UC, though. Read the agreement at assist.org. My friend’s cousin managed to transfer to UCB without taking a single physics course.

Also keep in mind that my class schedule also has to do with the pre-requisite courses/offered courses at my community college. For instance, I wanted to take Biology earlier but I needed to complete General Chemistry I, as a prerequisite first. Although I completed it the fall of 2008, my college didn’t offer Biology I in Spring 2009 so I had to wait until Fall 2009 to take it.

Oh & also, like Little_Duck was saying, my school also has lame introductory courses for biology and chemistry but I got out of that through my AP Scores from high school. My school also offered placements tests to test out of the introductory courses so lots of my classmates did that as well.

blah blah blah my post is really long.

anyway, if you think you need to take 3 years to take all the courses without overloading and stressing yourself out, then by all means take 3 years. there’s no reason to rush to try to transfer and take all the courses in 2 years if your gpa is going to be low and you’re not going to absorb all the material.

I wouldn’t suggest 4 science lol. That pretty brutal. I would save anatomy for summer if possible. Anatomy is not a cake walk class either even tho it has no pre-reqs for the class. The memorization is overwhelming. Finish physics and o-chem for sure because you need it to take p-chem.

For Berkeley you gotta take to an exam to get your o-chem waived so don’t forget what you learn in o-chem lol. Since you are good on pre-reqs I would start studying for the PCAT after this summer.

I agree.

I think I’m stressing myself out right now.
I’m currently taking:
Organic Chemistry 2
General Biology 2
Calculus 2
University Physics (Calc-based) 2
Introduction to Political Science
Art Appreciation

I’m just struggling with the workload. It feels like I’m running non-stop on a treadmill.
BUT, I’m finishing up all the pre-requisites plus additional major-related courses which will help me graduate in time.

ALSO, taking physics at a community college is significantly easier and less stressful than taking it at a UC. That’s why I’m finishing up physics early so I won’t have to take it at where ever I transfer to.

hey. You can definitely transfer in 2 years. People told me it would take me 3 years to transfer with my major (molecular biology) and it was really discouraging. However, I now know that its very possible. I’ll be done with all prereqs (math, bio, physics, general chem, ochem) before i transfer.

If you really work hard, you can even transfer in one year with a biology major. My friend transfered to ucsd in one year by finishing math, bio, general chem and igetc. Its hard though. GOOD LUCK!

I’m applying to pharmacy school this fall. (Yes. the same time I am applying for UC’s). I figured, if I don’t get in pharmacy school then I can fall back on transferring to the UC’s  (btw, I don’t need a degree to get into certain pharmacy schools so long as I clear the course prerequisites).

I’ve already taken the PCAT and for O-chem & Berkeley you’re talking about that ACS test right? My O-chem professor helps write that test. lol.

Uh, Anatomy has a prerequisite at my school (biochemistry intro). I’m gonna get that prerequisite overridden with my general bio I. I tried adding Anatomy for this fall semester at another college whose Anatomy prerequisites I met, but had trouble b/c I had no priority registration since i was new student :(

and uhhh oh yeah, i can’t take anatomy in the summer b/c some pharmacy schools i’m applying to start in June and/or mandate that all prerequisites be completed the spring term prior to matriculation.
