Question for Seniors

Hey guys, when are you (or at least when should you) actually ask your teachers for teachers recommendations? I wasn’t sure if I should catch them early in the beginning of the school year or wait.

As soon as possible. You have to give them time. I'm planning on letting my teachers know in the first week.

When should seniors request their transcripts for early admission (Oct. 1)? Regular admission (Jan. 1)?

Your school probably has a policy regarding how much time they need. At my school, we had to submit a request 2 weeks before the deadline (but they were pretty good about helping kids out if they needed one faster).

The first week? If you're asking senior year teachers, then they won't know you at all. Regardless, few colleges will have released their apps by the time the school year starts (at least in some parts of the country, where school starts next week!). I asked teachers for recommendation letters about four weeks before I wanted them back (which was about two weeks before they were due, giving my counselor time to compile everything and mail it out so it would reach on time). My school told us to submit transcript requests 5 days before they needed to be mailed out, but most of the time, they had transcripts ready and mailed or sent to the counselors within 2 hours.

it's usually suggested that you give them the rec forms at least a month before the deadline (but the earlier the bette). and make sure to note on the forms when the deadline is.

My advice is, try and be courteous of their schedule. Like, if you have a teacher you want to ask for recs who hands out a huge project at some point in the term and then has to spend weeks grading it, give them the form well in advance of the time they assign the project. By the time I start school in the midwest, most colleges will have their stuff up, so I'm going to talk to my teachers during the 2nd week of school most likely, so they can have the first week to get adjusted to being back.
