Hey guys, I'm really excited with my decision to enroll at Wesleyan this fall! I have a question for those students who play on the varsity team. Thing is I was quite busy with keeping afloat senior grades, committing to ECs as well as last-minute SAT taking to further bump my score. As a result, I didn't even apply to Wesleyan as an athlete!!!! (my original plan).

I want to play competitive baseball for Wesleyan and I feel that I have the potential to make the team, as I have represented my country in numerous national tournaments and also play in our semi-proffesional/amateur league. My question is, do the coaches of varsity sports at Wesleyan allow "walk-on" try-outs? Should I contact the head baseball coach in advance (like now?) to inform him that I did not apply as an athlete but that I'm deeply interested in playing for the team? Thank you so much in advance guys!

I could be mistaken, but, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a varsity athlete on the Wesleyan CC forum, so to cut to the chase: you should contact the coach. Also, in the interest of full-disclosure, you should probably read this thread from a Wes parent who posts nearly every year at about this time (FWIW, I haven’t a clue as to the truth of what he’s saying): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/wesleyan-university/481114-wesleyan-baseball-warning.html?highlight=baseball

Thank you for the post! Obviously I’m not going to Wesleyan for baseball, but for the great undergrad education I know I’ll receive there! It’s unfortunate that the poster had that negative disposition towards the coach. But who knows, I’ll email the coach anyway.

Thanks for the heads up! Anyone else?

Well, it looks like the head coach is “family” and, rather than sack him (not saying that they even considered that option), it looks like they brought in some assistance/mentoring last year in the form of a very experienced assistant who’s clearly not gunning for the head coaching position.

The head baseball coach was 2002 NESCAC Coach of the Year, so it’s not like he doesn’t have what it takes. He probably needs some gray hair – and possibly some relief from his other considerable responsibilities at Wes. It looks like they hired the gray hair in the form of Tom Yankus, so – with some trepidation – I wonder how things went last year (as that thread carries into the spring semester last year, but it lacks any update or current information on how things are going) and I’d be very interested to see how things fly as this season develops.
