If you're from the other coast/somewhere far away, I was wondering what you guys do in terms of moving in stuff. What do you bring on the plane/ship here/buy here?

Bring what you can’t live without. Pay the checked baggage fees if necessary. Shipping is hassle and not always reliable. You don’t need to have everything in place at the beginning of school. You’ll be home at Christmas break. Buy what you need here on the Left Coast. Bed, Bath Beyond, Target, Walmart, Costco, blah, blah, blah for all your needs. You’ll be pleasantly surprised that you can live without so much junk. Think Zen.

bumpppppity bump

I’m not from the West coast, but that first reply is very confusing to me…so it may be the same for others. why does it make sense to buy what you need out West when most of those stores are also around Ithaca or Upstate NY?

The OP is moving West for school. He lives on the East coast now. Or the opposite. He’s not too clear. Anyhow, I think he wants to know the best way to get set up for school coming from the opposite coast.

oh, OK, that must be where the confusion comes from. I assumed the OP was soliciting info from West coasters who are currently at Cornell, which could be right but I’m not entirely sure…
either way, I think you’re making good points about just picking up the essentials and not needing too many things anyway.

Pack as much as you can (necessary things), buy whatever you can when you get there, and mail whatever else.

Also if you’re back home for any breaks, you can bring more stuff then. I didn’t bring much in the way of warm clothing until Thanksgiving. I just packed really light going home, and brought tons of stuff back with me.

Right on the mark Batllo
I think I hear that most people don’t pack that much clothes, and just bring other “necessary” stuff. But one luggage and carry-on for a plane is really not enough to bring things IMO

Bed, Bath, and Beyond has a wonderful program where you go to the one by your house, you get a registry scanner, scan all the items you want to get in Ithaca.

Then you go to the Ithaca one after you fly here, go to the BBB in town, and they will have all of your items set aside and marked with your name. You can then choose to buy whichever of the items you had them set aside. If they don’t have it in the store in stock in Ithaca, they will have it shipped from another store in time for you to pick it up.

Really wonderful program. There’s also a FedEx store in downtown ithaca where you can have boxes shipped to.

When I moved here this fall I shipped two large boxes, checked 2 bags, my mom checked 1 and carried on one. Everything fit and it was worth it. I used UPS too. They were really helpful and easy.

My friends who came from outside of NYS brought their essentials with them in their suitcases and shipped the other items. If you choose to ship, make sure you use get some sort of delivery confirmation or use UPS/FedEx.

You won’t need heavy duty cold weather clothing until November, so you can bring those with you when you return from Thanksgiving break.
