What does "2:1 Honours degree or the equivilent" mean? Does that mean GPA? What would this correspond to on the American 4.0 scale?

A 2:1 is a level of degree. British degrees are usualy devided into the following levels

70%-100%= 1st
60%-69%= 2:1
50%-59%= 2:2
45%-49%= 3rd
40%-44%= Pass
Under 40%= Fail

The usual minimum required for postgraduate work is a 2:2 but many universities, especially the famous ones, want at least a 2:1.

There is no exact table comparing the value of a 2:1 to a GPA but it would be around 3.3 to 3.6

If you have any more questios about the British system I would be happy to help.

ok.....wow. thanks a bunch.

In other words, second upper class.
