If you apply for the priority deadline on December 1st, you get a decision by Feb, 15. On the Application, do you put if you want to be considered for the Honors Programs or do they just consider you?

I want to apply for the priority deadline but I know I will NOT get into any of the honors programs.

So my question is, since those who want to be considered for the honors program must apply by december 1st, what about the students who cannot get into the honors programs? Doesn't an average application look worse than another application of someone who wants to be in the honors program?

Do you think you could be denied just based on the fact that your application is surrounded by others who are much smarter and want to be in the honors program? Do you think it would be better than to apply January 1st?

All the admissions counselors urge applicants to apply by the priority deadline. Over 80% of those admitted are from the priority decision. I think they select the honors by your gpa/tests scores, etc and they have a list of questions for the applicant to answer that probably determines other factors, such as research. And they give you a decision AROUND Feb 15th...this year letters weren't received until after Feb 22nd. Priority decision increases your chances of getting accepted. The UMD application process is thorough...nothing is just glanced over.

I agree with desvw..I think you increase your chances by applying priority decision and your odds of any possibility of honors, scholarships etc.
No you do not write you wish to be considered for honors..they consider the applicants automatically.

they don't ask you specifically whether or not you want to be in honors, but there is one question asking if you prefer a broad course of study in many disciplines or a more focused track. if you want honors, write that you want to study many different subjects. if you indicate interest in a more specific thing, they may put you in Scholars (if you have good grades and test scores). the "niche" questions on the app help them decide what programs fit you best.

From what I've either read on these boards or heard from other people, first UMCP makes the decisions for ED... then the Gemstone people get a chance to go through all the accepted candidates and make their choices, then honors and scholars. So, if you are interested in UMCP at all, get your application to them by the early deadline so you can be part of that group. Don't sell yourself short, my d's SAT were not so fantastic and she got into scholars - so you never know....
