Question from a Freshman

So, I'm a freshman this year, came a week late into classes, missed orientation, etc.

I was just wondering, to anyone who has taken dance technique classes at Kenyon (beginning ballet and modern specifically), how much outside work did they contain?

I'm signed up for 2.5 credits Spring semester, with two of them being dance. I'm just wondering how reasonable it is. From those I've talked to, they said it wouldn't be too hard, but I jsut wanted to ask more people.

Thanks.

Hi Brokenchild,

I'm a dance major... so I think I'm well qualified to answer your question.

Beginning technique classes have the most class work or all technique classes, though it's not too much. You'll probably be required to keep a weekly journal, do some readings, write a paper on the spring dance concert, and have a midterm conference. The work really isn't hard, but I for one am awful at journaling, and I've struggled in the past.

I've taken a few semesters with 4 main courses and two dance techniques, and I'm not going to lie, it can be really tough. Though it's not a lot of paper work, you're spending six more physically exhausting hours a week on classes. Since freshman year can be tough, I might recommend that you take one of your main classes pass/fail for some extra relief, or that you try to audit a technique class.

PM me if you have more dance related questions!

I was going to take one of the four main classes P/D/F. Thanks for you input!

I have another question. As it's the time for filling out FAFSA and CSS, I'm worried about how my financial aid package is going to change. I didn't have to pay anything this year, and I'm hoping for the same next year.

Does Kenyon give academic scholarships for students other than incoming freshman? I'm not sure if I'll need any extra. Nothing has changed financially for me this year. I'm just really worried.

I don't have a job and my aunt, who I live with, only make $10,000 a year, if we're lucky. I canNOT afford a school like Kenyon without getting a full ride and I am terrified I'll lose out on college.
