Question from a mom

Hello, my son is a high school senior and he has been accepted ED at Wake. He is very excited about the school and has expressed that he would want to be in a fraternity. Would anyone be able to educate me on the reputations of each of the fraternities at Wake? My son has played 4 years varsity football, is very involved in church and mission activities, and is a big sports fan. He is a little inexperienced socially - - he does not drink, has not really dated, but hangs out with groups of girls and guys from his school on weekends. I am not delusional to think he will not drink in college, but would want him to be aware of fraternities that are not filled with hardcore partiers. Any feedback on which fraternities may be a good fit for him? Appreciate any insight. Thanks!

I can probably go toe to toe with you on helicoptering parenting but at some point, aka COLLEGE, you have to let your son take the reins on this one. I really do mean this in the nicest possible way.

He might consider Alpha Phi Omega. They are a national co-ed service fraternity. From their web site:

The Kappa Theta Chapter at Wake Forest University has served the Winston-Salem area since 1952. We strive to promote service to the college campus, to the community, and to the country by organizing and taking part in dozens of service projects throughout the year…and to have fun while doing it. By becoming a Kappa-Theta brother you will be joining a brotherhood. Our motto is: Be A Leader. Be a Friend. Be of service.

Alpha Phi Omega and a traditional social fraternity are going to be worlds apart. Basically Alpha Phi Omega is going to be a club that goes and volunteers and does service projects. A traditional fraternity is going to be a brotherhood of guys that are best friends, hang out together, socialize with other fraternities and sororities and do events on campus, but they are also going to be volunteering and doing philanthropy events on the side.

I would recommend you check out all the fraternity websites for Wake Forest, not the national ones. That will give you a feel for them. There is also a website called Greekrank, students review fraternities and sororities. Please take it all with a grain of salt though because there a lot of self ranking. The discussion section is something that is a little more reliable.

But in the end you’re going to have to let your son do this on his own. He’ll go through rush, meet the guys and find the right fit for him.

Every fraternity drinks a lot.

Have ED decisions been sent out?
