Question from a USAFA cadet....

So, perhaps someone knows the answer to this: son (USAFA 2010) will be spending next semester at WP and would like to have a car parked somewhere in Highland Falls. Apparently 2010s can drive but can't actually park on the base. Anyone have any experience or ideas on this? Is there someplace in town that a car can be kept? I recognize that this isn't exactly what this kind of forum is for but I'm hoping someone might be able to help. Thanks in advance.

If nothing changes from previous years, the 2010 cadets at West Point will not be allowed to have a car (even parked in the Highland Falls area off post) until Spring break. I realize this is not what your son wants to hear, but I assume as an exchange student he will be governed by the same rules.

Good to know. Apparently, he got some misinformation.

AFDAD---tell your son he will be most welcome at WP! Our D was fortunate to spend a semester at AF her cow year and loved it! Sorry, no cars till spring break :(.

USAFADAD,

Tell your son that if he wants to have a car (and many 2010's DO have cars, despite what these people say), he should contact one of the hotels in highland falls. They charge something like $10-$20 per month to store vehicles.

The best advice is to follow the rules, they are in place for good reason. Every year some cadets find themselves wishing they had done so. Having a car off post and not being able to actually drive it on post is kinda tough and may not be allowed. Have your cadet contact his COC for the specfic regs regarding this---just because "many do" doesn't mean "any should".

Shogun - thanks, I'll tell him -- and thanks to everyone else as well.

Shogun -- What a great line: Just because "many do" doesn't mean "any should". I'm going to make a sign to put on my desk -- that's great advice!
