Question from an incoming freshman

Do you guys know when we’re supposed to get there? I know classes start in late August, but is there a specific date we have to show up or is there a window of a week or so before classes start when we can check into the dorms at any time?

There is a week before classes that you can move in. It is called Welcome Week and there are special programs you can sign up for, such as Explore DC (you can read about these programs on the AU website). While Explore DC costs money, various clubs and organizations hold cookouts and other special events which are free of charge. You should be receiving information about all the activities in the mail.

The dorms open on Saturday August 18th at 9am. You can get there anytime after that. If you are not participating in one of the special programs mentioned above, I believe that you can move in as late as Thursday August 23rd. If you have any questions, you can e-mail

They have always responded promptly when I have e-mailed them with questions.

Thanks for the replies! I’ve been asking around and haven’t gotten a straight answer from anyone. Just one last thing, do the dining programs take effect when classes start or when we get there?

Last year TDR and other dining facilities were open during Welcome Week, but I vaguely remember rushing to go to eat at the dining hall lol. I’m sure it will be, but there are many other places you’ll be wanting to go/dining at during Welcome Week so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Ok great, I’m planning on getting there either the 20th or 21st. Thanks for the help! :-D
