question from incoming freshman

I have 2 questions... First off, does the large student body at rutgers (approx. 36k) affect the quality of education at all (i.e. getting help from teachers and what not) and second what is Rutgers retention rate?

Yes, it will effect your education - classes will be bigger.
Yes, it will effect your education - they don’t have the resources to coddle you.
Yes, Rutgers has a low graduation rate - 70% after six years.

BUT, it is still possible to go to office hours, get teachers to help you, etc.; you just really need to take the initiative.

this fall, ru will see its largest enrollment ever and its highest retention rate. the exact numbers for this year won’t be available until october.
last year, i never saw an issue with not getting enough attention from professors or ta’s. they are glued to their emails and sakai (online classroom thing), so that really helps. also, not a lot of people seek advice, only a few do, so teachers aren’t as crazed as u think. all also must keep office hours and offer help.

yes most of your 1st and 2nd year classes will be huge, but it’s extremely easy to get help from teachers. Professors are more than glad to help you if you come with a question after lecture or something. And most classes will have a recitation period once a week where it’s maybe 20 kids and you can ask the TA anything. TA’s aren’t as good as professors but there’s always office hours. And TA’s are usually good at the basic stuff you take during your first and second years at college.

I would like to reiterate the importance of office hours. As the other students have stated, yes the class sizes will be quite large in your first couple years at Rutgers, but office hours are great for personalized attention. I personally have taken full advantage of office hours for just about every class and have greatly benefited from them. I strongly advise you seek out help from your professors and TA’s alike; that is what they’re there for. Also, I personally find it very helpful to work in a small study group with fellow classmates; this allows you to make good friends and learn more effectively.

Also, if you have any questions about a laptop for school, check out my discussion entitled “Apple Campus Rep”. There is the great Back-to-School Promotion going on right now until September 26th where you get a free iPod Touch with the purchase of any Mac and as always you get a great student discount!
