Question from potential transfer student

Hi, I'm thinking of transferring to U Maryland and have a few questions. How is the financial aid that this school provides?? I won't be able to attend this school if they just hand me a bunch of loans. Also what are some of the popular majors here? I'm currently studyin' American Studies and Political Science (might change poly sci to urban geography), would U Marlyand be a good place for this?? Also, how easy or difficult is it to travel to DC from the campus?? Btw im from out of state, that probably makes a difference...

I can address the travelling to CD---it is incredibly easy. D and her friends go into DC at least once a week; they've done several of the Smithsonian museums, she did research for a paper at the Library of Congress. There's a bus that takes you directly from the front of the union to the metro station in College Park. From there, you take the metro right into DC. D's friends at Georgetown complain that it's much easier for D to get to the nat'l mall area than it is for them! D is OOS also; she learned the metro "ropes" from a "local" (fellow student on her dorm floor). Of course, like any big city, she's careful about when/where she goes, and has only gone in by herself during the daylight hours...

What college you from?

Best majors for Maryland are Business, Architecture, Psychology, Computer Science, and Engineering. Financial aid at Maryland is not good from what I hear. They offer no scholarships, like barely any. I think it's all loans.

Alright, I transfered to UMD this semester, so I will try to answer your questions, as well as providing some of my own input

Im not sure about financial aid, but I have heard that they are not particullary generous with it

Political Science is rpetty popular here, and I think that Urban Geogrpahy is pretty popular as well

DC is pretty easy to get to. You have to take the bus to the metro station, which can be somewhat of a pain, as its not right on campus like some of the Boston schools, but the metro is VERY CLEAN, much cleaner than NYC's

The thing about transfering to UMD is that you are not guaranteed housing at least for your first year, which makes it difficult to meet people, but other than that, UMD is a great school
