Hello,
So I am currently on Financial Aid and I was wondering, if I were to drop a class with a W. How much will I have payback for dropping the class with a W? I currently attend EVCC, if that helps. Also what is my timeframe to payback the amount I owe for dropping 1 class.
Thanks if you can help.
Too many variables to answer. Will dropping the class take you below full time? Is any of your FA based on the number of credits you take?
how many credits did you have? how many would you have after dropping?
What aid do you receive?
Well I am currently taking full time but if I drop this one class, it will put me below full time. FA is based on how many credits I take (i believe so). If I drop this one class I would be taking 7 credits.
I don’t do loans, its pell grants and such. Thanks for the help.
Yes, if you drop below full time (usually 12 credits) your Pell grant will be decreased. Any school granted aid might be reduced. I don’t know if they will make you repay the Pell grant or just decrease your award for the spring, but you’ll have to pay it before they’ll give you more aid or release your transcripts.
Go to your FA office today and find out what the impact is.
Also…keep in mind that altho 12 credits is considered to be be “full time”, it’s not enough to graduate on time.
Do you mean just for OP’s school, or for every school?
Most schools consider 12 credits full time. Most schools also require 120 semester hours to graduate, so it would take 5 years or 10 semesters at only 12 credits. Most students take 15 or 16 per semester. It’s okay to have a light semester once or twice, but then you may have to take 17 the next semeter to make it up.
Interesting. The schools I’m most familiar with consider 12 credits to be full time, and 8 semesters of 12 credits each will meet the degree requirements (as far as number of total credits is concerned).
@BelknapPoint What univs are those? I’ve never come across any like that.
Most schools that are the semester system will require 120 credits to graduate (more for eng’g).
I guess it depends on how the school defines a “credit.” Generally (because I don’t doubt that there are exceptions) the NESCAC schools require 32 “credits” to graduate, with one regular class equaling one credit, or four regular classes per semester over eight semesters being required. The schools that have Jan Plan/Winter Study/Winter Term/Short Term (whatever) generally require 36 “credits,” the four additional credits coming from the one intensive class taken during the Winter Term/Short Term over each of four academic years.
I my post #8 above, I was translating one regular course into 3 “credit hours” to get 12 credits per semester of four classes.
This particular student is at a CC, let’s not sidetrack the question.
Read your student policy on SAP

When yu understand that you can go to the financial aid office and see what you will owe back. I think the longer you remain in class the less you will have to repay. If you owe, you will not be able to continue until you pay it. Also dropping the class looks like it will put your into SAP warning and if you do not follow the instructions the next semester you could be dismissed or ineligible for aid.
