In looking at my son's financial aid package, we see that his National Merit scholarship reduces the Harvey Mudd grant. I thought, based on Outside Awards & Financial Aid Awards, that it would reduce my son's contributions of loans and work-study, not the grants. What's up?

Well - was the scholarship from NM or from HM?

Mudd, I guess. It wasn’t the $2500 from NM and it wasn’t corporate sponsored. I thought it was from NM, but I really don’t know.

“While these awards are granted independent of financial need, if you receive a merit-based award and are also eligible for need-based aid, your merit award will be included in the aid provided to meet your financial need. Thus, the amount of other aid you receive may be reduced. A merit-based award will not reduce your familys calculated contribution.”

[HMC Merit-Based Awards](Merit-Based Scholarships | Harvey Mudd College)

NM is just confusing. “NM award” can mean money from :1) NM, 2)corporations , 3) colleges.
Has all the HM NM aid been awarded? I thought my son would get something since he is a Finalist and didn’t get money from a corp. or NM. But we haven’t heard anything about it. But maybe it takes a while for HM to be sure of who got awards from NM and/or corps.

was HMC named as the first choice college for NM? Unfortunately my D was NMF and had named another college as her first choice on NM and as of April 27 didn’t for sure know if she was going to Mudd (she did choose Mudd) but therefore she had to decline her NM scholarship since it was offered by the “first choice school” and it wasn’t transferrable.
I know this doesn’t help your original question…but I wondered if anyone else had that happen…? or had a recommendation on how to get her NMF money…turns out it WAS an option to put UNDECIDED on the NM scholarship application but I guess we didn’t read the fine print. Eventually her first choice school ended up being her 2nd choice, while HM became 1st.

He got the award; now the Mudd need-based scholarship is $n - 2000 compared to what it was before. They acknowledged it (he said he expected it and they sent out a corrected form) and took the corresponding amount out.

@nemom - yes, they said they’ll get their final list from NMSC sometime in the summer. We jumped the gun by filling out the line that says “do you expect any other money”.

@warrior - yes, but [Outside Awards & Financial Aid Awards](http://www.hmc.edu/admission1/costsandaid1/typesofaid1/scholarshipsandgrants1/outsideandprivateawards1/outsideawardsfinancialaidawards.html) says “Beginning in the fall 2008 semester for the first-year class and continuing forward, students will be able to take 100% of their outside awards toward first reducing the need-based portion of their need-based student loans and/or Federal Work Study funds.” That’s what we were hoping for - the same amount of grants and less loans.

I agree with you GeekMom63. Call the financial aid office and see what is up.

Same thing happened to me, NM merit scholarship was reduced from need-based scholarship amount. Mudd itself sponsors most of the NM scholarships so it doesn’t count as an outside award, unless you get a corporate one.

@Suin - bummer - thanks.

I learned about that the day after I learned that Byrd had been cancelled, and Byrd was pretty likely since it’s formulaic in our state. Two ouchies in two days. :(
