I saw a question on an application that I wondered how accurate one should be.

Question: What other schools are you applying to?

On the one hand, I thought they wanted to know their competition. But then, are they also trying to figure out how serious you are? What do you think and how many schools should get listed?

I don’t know what to put down for this either so I am curious as to what people will say. If it is for a lesser selective school and they see Ivy’s or more selective schools that you are applying to will they think you will not attend and then waitlist you to protect yield?

Last year when I applied, BU asked for this. On the BU application I wrote “Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Brown, BC, Tufts.” Obviously these schools are more selective than BU, but I was still accepted.

Honestly, just be honest. Do you really want to attend a school that isn’t paying attention to you as an applicant but the self-serving likelihood of obtaining you for your space on the roster?
