Can somebody detail the basics and intricacies of thsi program? When applying, I didn't really find much about the business prog. but was really interested in it. Do they tell you if you have been accepted to the business program when you receive your main acceptance e-mail or does Haas' decision come separately? Considering that I get acceptance into Ross at UMich, Ill definately choose Cal over Ross. However, Im not even certain when Cal has sent out its acceptance letter for Haas.

Also, does the undergrad business prog start at Junior year? ..I think I read that somewhere before. Argghhh, Im so confused. >.<

as a senior in high school, you apply for berkeley as a pre-business "major" during your freshman and sophomore year you take breadth classes that fill up the prerequisites for applying to haas. you actually apply to haas in the fall of your sophomore year and hear back during spring. about 400 people apply each year and only 50-60% gets in. just being in a pre-business program does not guarantee your admission to haas.
and yes, you start undergraduate program at haas in junior year.

You must apply for admission to Haas your second year at Cal. There is the chance that you may not be accepted (which depends on your grades, among other things).

Is admission into Haas as random and luck-based as applying for an undergrad school? or is it more merit based, with near sure acceptance fo rhte students with good GPA and such?

My dad has a friend whose son graduated from Haas, but without getting to talk to him yet, from Haas's FAQ:

Question: How many students are accepted into the program? What is the average GPA of admitted students?
Answer: Admission to the Haas Undergraduate Program is highly competitive. We admit 8-11% of transfer applicants and 40-50% of continuing UC Berkeley applicants. The average GPA for admitted transfer students is 3.70 - 3.80. The average GPA for continuing UC Berkeley students is 3.40 3.60.

Question: How does the Admission Committee evaluate applications?
Answer: The application is broken down as follows: 50% Grades & Coursework, 35% Essays and 15% Resume/extra-curricular activities. In addition to reviewing applications for completion of minimum eligibility requirements and academic achievement and promise, the Admission Committee will review many factors, including performance in key prerequisites (business, math, economics, statistics), grade trends, course load, consistency of academic performance, leadership skills, interest in being an active member of the Haas community, knowledge of contemporary business issues, accomplishments as demonstrated by extra-curricular activities, as well as communication and analytical skills as demonstrated by responses to essay questions. The selection criteria used by the Admission Committee is summarized on our website at: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/applying.html

The person I was referring to above was a straight A student. I don't know what extracurriculars he had though.
