I noted on JHU website that November 15 is the due date for CSS Profile form for financial aid plus supplementary materials (if applicable)
I applied early decision to Johns Hopkins; and I checked "Yes" for the statement on common app: "Will you be a candidate for need-based financial aid?"

Does this mean that I need to turn in a CSS Profile online by November 15? Who is applicable? What exactly is the purpose of CSS Profile in JHU application process? My parents have told me that CSS Profile does not need to be done until January, but considering that I applied early decision to JHU, I believe I need to!

Thank you!

To start you should thoroughly read the instructions on how to apply for financial aid as a freshman applicant here:

JHU Student Financial Services | Prospective Students | Freshman & Transfers | How to Apply

Everything is stated quite clearly in these step-by-step instructions:

CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE 2008-2009.
Students who are applying for Early Decision must submit the PROFILE by November 15. The CSS PROFILE code for Hopkins is 5332.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Students applying for Early Decision should file the FAFSA after their acceptance to JHU.

Federal Income Tax Returns and Other Required Documents.
Early Decision applicants must meet this requirement after acceptance to JHU.

Non-Custodial Parent Supplement.
Early decision applicants must submit the non-custodial parent supplement by November 15 and the 2007 federal income tax return after acceptance to JHU.

*So if you are an ED applicant applying for financial aid -- you must get that CSS Profile form submitted before November 15 or you will not be considered for financial assistance during the ED review. *

The "are you applying for financial aid" question on the application has nothing to do with the financial aid application process.

Admissions Daniel, can you please clarify this statement:

"The "are you applying for financial aid" question on the application has nothing to do with the financial aid application process".

I read this as if the CSS Profile is submitted by Nov 15, there will be consideration for financial assistance during the ED review, regardless of how the "applying for financial aid" question was answered on the Common App.

Correct? (on the ED app, the box was inadvertently checked as "not applying for need based FA").

Thanks

Your answer on the application to the question about will you be applying for financial aid does nothing in terms of starting a financial aid application. The reason we ask this question is to notify the Financial Aid Office which applicants may be potential Financial Aid applicants. It is used as a communications tool, if that.

Your answer to that question does not affect your status as a financial aid candidate. The only way you become a candidate for Financial Aid is by APPLYING FOR FINANCIAL AID.
