Is it possible to apply early action (non-restrictive) and early decision at the same time? (not considering the ethical implications for now, just technicalities) Although colleges say that they strongly recommend applicants not to do this, can they actually find out if it happens? Do people actually apply like this?

Just to make my point, I never had any intention of doing this, but I am just curious if people actually do this.

yes it is possible, but only if it OK with all the schools to which you are applying early. Different schools have different policies on EA and ED.

People do this all the time and there's nothing unethical about it (as long as you only apply to one ED school, of course). And, as noted, different schools have different policies. For example, Georgetown does not allow you to apply EA if you're applying elsewhere ED. And Stanford does not allow you to apply ED or EA anywhere else.

Most schools have no problem with this.

Georgetown and Boston College will not accept an EA app from someone who has applied ED somewhere else.
