Question on Financial Aid

So today me and my dad were filling out my FAFSA form and we weren't sure if we had to put both his income and my mom's and if so we would be in the 100k and above bracket. But we called and asked and found out we only have to put my dad's income since my parents are separated so now we are in the 50,000-74,999 bracket. Does this give me a better chance of getting financial aid, and would I be able to get need-based scholarships with that?

FAFSA is only a test for federal aid. Federal aid in your income bracket is limited to federal loans of $5.5-7.5K/year. Anything else would be loans to your parents. Most schools which award significant need-based aid are highly competitive for admission and use the CSS Profile or their own financial data forms. You may have a better shot at trying to get merit aid. What is your home state and what are your stats? What kind of schools are you looking for?

Are you a Senior this year going to college in Fall 2013? If so you can’t fill out the FAFSA until 1/1/13. If you completed the form out there now it is the wrong form.

My home state is California
I have a total GPA of 4.3898 and a 10-12 GPA of 4.5610
Currently I am ranked 2nd in my class but it may go down to 3rd or 4th.

AP classes I have taken/will take: European History, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Physics B, Literature, Government, and I will be taking chemistry and biology.
Honors: Pre Cal, Chemistry, Physics
Summer College Classes: Psychology, US History, Sociology, and Statistics

SAT score: Reading:560 Math:700 Writing:520
ACT score: Reading:23 Writing:22 English:22 Science:27 Math:34 Composite:27
SAT II: Math2:590 (I will be retaking this and taking the physics one as well)

Extra curriculars: Link Crew Leader: 4 years
National Honor Society: 2 years
Hip Hop Dance Club: 3 years Junior year VP and Senior year President
Contemporary Club: 3 years Senior year VP
Student government: 2 years Freshman Class President and Sophomore Class Treasurer
Asian Pacific Islander Club: 3 years
Titan Tutor Club: 1 year
I have two hip hop dance crews I do outside of school

That’s pretty much everything and the colleges I want to apply to are: UC Davis, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UCLA, Santa Clara University, and Cornell Uniersity. My main two choices right now are Cornell University and UC Irvine because I want to double major and both these schools will allow me to double major in Dance and Math.

So if you are a Senior why were you filling out the FAFSA?

Well I wasn’t really filling it out, I was getting together all of the information I will need for filling out the FAFSA so that when it comes time to fill it out then I will be ready to fill it out

Schools like Cornell require CSS Profile as well. And, Cornell (and other top schools) require the info of BOTH parents…even if separated or divorced. And, requires the info of any new spouses.

Ok good to know, so is the CSS profile where I would put both of my parents’ income?

Yes, it would go into the CSS Profile.

Your mom’s info goes on the CSS Profile. Your dad’s info goes on the NCP form.

oops…

If you live with your DAD, then your dad’s info goes on CSS Profile and your mom’s info goes on the NCP info.

Sorry, I thought you lived with your mom.
