Question on first-generation college/american.

So I've heard about these hooks with first generation college/americans and I was wondering if I fall into any of these categories.

My parents came from Asia and my dad went to college but dropped out. Will that qualify me as a "first generation college" student?

Also, does first generation mean in my immediate family or my entire family tree?(Like if my uncle went to college in the US, will that nullify me as a first generation college?)
And likewise for first generation american; is it my immediate family(my parents and siblings) or my entire family tree(uncle, aunt, grandparent, etc)?

I would assume I would be first generation american because my parents came over from Asia without any prior exposure to American society, but please do clerify.

You are first generation American but not first generation college since your dad did attend college for a while.

Please remember that while these may be worth a “bonus point” or two, neither of these are true hooks. A hook is something that will get you in for sure such as a star athlete that the coach has hand-picked.

Also note that there is nowhere on the application that asks if you are “first generation.” Your status is dependent on your responses to questions about your parents’ background and educational status.
