Question on IGETC for UC

I just would like to have a clarification on IGETC for UC.

My son’s community college has a chart for “IGETC for CSU or UC”.
While this chart requires him to take Oral Communication class to be certified,
it also says “Oral Communication is for CUS requirement only (not required by UC)”.

Will a community college issue a different IGETC certificate for CSU and UC?
I am a little confused. He is only applying for UCs this fall.

My son’s community college’s portal has a progress chart and it says he is missing
Oral communication class, and he has no choice to indicate that he will only need
IGETC for UC not CSU.

Or if he wants to get IGETC certified by this community college, will he have to take
Oral Communication class in spring even though he really does not need it for UC?

He will be talking to one of the counselors sometimes this week, but they have been
wrong with some advise they gave him in the past…

He will be completing IGETC this semester except for Oral Communication and he
should be able to fit it into his spring semester pretty easily if needed as he will only
need 7 more semester units and also will finish major requirements for most of the UCs
(one left, which he is taking for UCLA) this semester.

This in the information I found on UC website.

My son only followed this chart, not the chart his community college gave him.

I will appreciate any help on this.

He should ask the person at the community college who deals with IGETC about it.

Since you did not name the community college, it is hard for others to help you in terms of finding documents like the following:

https://www.deanza.edu/counseling/documents/ge_igetc.pdf
http://alameda.peralta.edu/articulation/files/2018/01/COA_IGETC-2017-18.pdf
https://www.smc.edu/StudentServices/TransferServices/AreasofStudy/Documents/igetc.pdf
https://www.dvc.edu/enrollment/counseling/pdfs/17-18%20IGETC%20final%203-24-2018.pdf
https://www.cabrillo.edu/services/articulation/documents/igetcaastudhdout.pdf

My son’s college is listed above, but all other colleges state the same.
Oral Communication is for CSU only, but my question is that
will they have a separate IGETC certificate for CSU and UC
as their requirements are slightly different (not only the diffrence
in English requirements, but UC also has a foreign language requirement ,
not CSU)?

My son will be definitely talking to one of the counselors, but
they have given him some wrong information on other things.

He will have to use their comments as a reference only.
I would also like to ask the people on this forum for advice
through their own experience.

Thank you for your help.

Update:My son talk to two different people at his community college on the question
I posted above, and he got two different answers unfortunately.

One person said he had to take Oral Communication class to get IGETC certified,
and the other person said he will get IGETC for UC without Oral Communication class
as UCs do not require it.

He will just take the class just in case as he needs one more class to stay
as a full time student for UC Davis TAG.

They also gave him two different registration dates for spring semester.
Not very helpful at all…

@hoppy1 You are correct. You do not need that third comm class in English for the UCs. You will still get certified for the UC without it. You only need it if you’re applying to a CSU and want that certification.

He does NOT need it if he’s only applying to the UCs.

@Ohm888 Thank you for your response! It seems like his community college will only give him partial certificate
if he does not take the public speaking class even though he is only applying for UCs. I just do not understand it, but that was what he was told. He might need to contact the dean in this case.

He is planning to take the class regardless just in case as he needs another class to be a full time student.

May I ask you how he should handle his UC application also as you seem to know really well about UC transfer(I appreciate all your posts)?

He has every intention to take the third English class but there is no guarantee if he can register if for Spring semester as his school messed up his priority registration status(he has gone to the admission office to fix it many times, but it has not been done).

  1. Should he check off the box that he is completing IGETC , and will update his application in January if he can not register the class? or

2.He should not check off the box(indication that he is not completing it), then add comments stating he is planning to take the last class, but there is no guarantee if he can take the class in spring.

Will he able to update the information like IGETC in January in either way?

I just do not want him to state that he is completing it, and will end up not completing it(I know it could result in cancellation of his possible admission), but at the same time I want him to be a competitive candidate(he is a humanity major, so I heard IGETC is pretty important).

Thank you for any advise you could give us.

He does not need that class for UC IGETC. I never took it and got full certification. You need to get another advisor because that is plain wrong. Yes, you check the IGETC completion box. It covers through spring.

Thank you. He will go talk to another counselor to clarify the situation.

@Ohm888

My son went to see a different counselor. The counselor looked at every class he took and is taking, and said my son’s IGETC would be fully certified for UC.

It turned out he would have to take Public Speaking class only if he was planning to get an associate
degree from the community college even if he was applying for UCs.

Thank you for your advice! He feels less stressed.

@hoppy1 Glad it worked out. It’s unfortunate that some of these advisors don’t know what they’re doing.
