Hi, I want to be a Computer Science major in Berkeley School of Letters and Sciences. Should I do the IGETC program? Will it raise my chances?

You should check to see if they accept the IGETC. I know some departments at certain universities do not accept the IGETC.

IGETC doesn’t raise one’s chances. Everyone more or less has it done. Not doing it will mess you up, but having it done is basically assumed.

Anyway, I found this on assist.org:

Articulation Agreement by Major
Effective during the 07-08 Academic Year

====Computer Science, Lower Division B.A.====

College Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
This major is offered by the College of Letters and Science (L&S).

By the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment at Berkeley,
you must complete either:
- The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Foreign Language, and
Quantitative Reasoning; OR - IGETC

In addition:
- Complete as many lower division major requirements (see below) as possible
before transfer.

In general:
- completion of L&S Requirements (or IGETC), plus
- strength of academic preparation, and
- grade point average
are the primary selection criteria for admission.

so does that mean its recommended? Also, how long does it take to be IGETC certified, if you do well.

It depends on how many units you take at a time (and how smart you are…) You can do it in 1.5 years, probably better within 2 years. Take your Math and English early, as well as your foreign language.

I don’t know if IGETC is recommended for the major…but you may as well do it, unless you want to do another form of GE after you transfer.
