When does the SHARP application usually come out?

It was due on Valentine's Day last year. (February 14th). I had my interview on April Fools Day. I guess they like the whole "holiday" theme? I think the application will probably be out around December-January if they continue the program this year?

Do we conduct individual research at the program - almost like an RSI-type thing?

Yes, all apprentices get paired up with a mentor. They try to pair up people based on their research interests as closely as possible but it is sometimes hard because not a lot of researchers volunteer to host us in their labs. Your mentor assigns you a research project to work on that is usually pretty closely related to what your mentor is currently researching.

Now if I were to participate in the SHARP program over the summer, would I be given enough time to create and complete a research project that would be ready to compete for Siemens in the fall?

NASA SHARP is ending. No more applications will be released.

Wait...there will be more NASA SHARP?

Botildi, where did you get that information??

Yeah, where'd you get that from?

I heard it too. On the last day of the program this year our coordinator told us it was the last year of the program. But, when I told this to everybody on CC they said it MIGHT be the last year of the program depending on funding.

Ah...that's sad :(

My faculty coordinator got a letter saying the gov. is shutting SHARP down. It's the last year, and there is no more funding. NASA might be opening a new program for college students... Stay tuned.

I heard that too. We had a guy come in to hear our opinions, like reviewing the program kind of thing. It was on the day of our closing ceremony and everyone had almost pulled an all nighter the night before and the thing was at 9 in the morning so most of us were so tired we werent even thinking. The guy was like asking questions about the program and really trying to pull bad opinions from us (which wasn't too hard cuz we werent exactly functional). then he was like, we are losing money for the program and need to find org to sponsor it next year. It's very sad. Most memorable summer I've had by far. It should really continue.

noooooooo!!!!

Our coordinator said "MIGHT" also, depending on funding. She also said that even though they may end it, there's a possibility that there'll be a similar program, just with another name and purpose perhaps.

From what I've heard - directly from MTSI reps - SHARP should still be around. Academy, on the other hand, may be in a bit of a bind [it's fine in terms of finances, but NASA is trying to get all its internship programs under the eq. opportunity office].

There's a new program at Goddard space flight center [MD] called the Robotics Internship Program (http://university.gsfc.nasa.gov/robotics/) for rising freshman [college] and onwards :). Interestingly, the funding for this came from Academy's surplus money.

Are there any bio-related projects done at SHARP, or are most of the projects astro/space-oriented?

at the residential site i went to, we had two people who did biology projects. one of them studied "lambda DNA insertations into escherichia coli." i hope that helps.
