Question on Preliminary Application

I am really at the beginning stages of the application process and have a few questions on the Preliminary Application. My updated SAT scores will be avaiable on October 25 and I am sure I will score higher than I did on the last SAT Test. Should I wait to apply or can I get the updated SAT results forwarded to the admissions office.
2.When putting in my GPA, only last years GPA is currently available from my school, as the firsr marking period has not ended yet.
3. On page 2 of the online application, there is an area for Remarks or Additional Comments. Do I provide the academy with the above information in this area (it is limited to 2,000 characters). I also found out that I would be eligible for a Presidential Nomination as my father has been in the active and reserve component of the US Navy Seabees and is a veteran. Do I give them this information? I am not really sure what they are looking for in Remarks or Additional Comments". Thank you in advance for your help.

Are you applying for the Class of 2012? If that is the case, you are way behind the eight ball. If you are applying for the Class of 2013, you need to wait until 1 February 2008 and then complete the application for Summer Seminar which is also used as a preliminary application.

The preliminary application is used to determine whether or not you meet the minimum requirements to become a candidate. The minimum SAT or ACT equivalent scores are 530 verbal and 570 math. Unless you are provided with a candidate number, having the College Board send SAT scores to the academy is futile and a waste of money.

For the application process, the Admissions Board uses the 6 semester transcript from the end of your junior year. The academy also requires that mid-year (7 semester transcripts) be submitted. Furthermore, all candidates who accept appointments must submit their final high school transcript.

Being eligible for a Presidential nomination is irrelevant at the preliminary application stage.

In the remarks section, you can provide any information, not already provided, that you consider germane to your application.

Would that include extracurricular and community activities, or why I think I would be a good candidate, or does that not matter at this point?

1003nmcb27: Others on this forum may disagree, but if you are applying for Class of 2012, I think you should explain why you are just now filling out the preliminary application. Don't waste much time on it - you are out of time. If you are going for Class of 2013, you have plenty of time.

Make sure you know the deadlines for your Congressional nomination applications, because you may have already missed those deadlines (our representative's deadline was last week, as were several others). Remember, to apply for nominations you generally must have multiple letters of recommendation, so you need to allow time for that process as well.

We must assume that your pursuing Class of 2012 since the pre app or app would not be available for 2013. Agree with 2012 that it may be valuable to explain how you're arriving at this point in the process at this point in time.

May be too late for a Presidential nom. for 2012. You would have to finish your application, get through DoDMERB, get the supporting documentation together and get it all before the board ASAP. Only 100 Presidential noms can get in per year, although an unlimited number can be given out.

I am also slightly curious as to why you started the process this late. If you started the application process with any other regular college or university right now I'm sure you'd be ahead of the curve, however that isn't the case with Service Academies. I started in July of 2007 and I though I was behind most.

Anyway, let me be the first to wish you luck with you endevor. It's great that your applying to the Academy. I wish you the best of luck.

Stop. Hold the presses. You are fine. Applications are not due until Jan 31, 2008. No explanations necessary. You are still ahead of the average. The primary reason that USNA asks for applications in the early Fall is so the Board will have something to do when it first commences meeting in October. The fact that they continue to get more busy as the season progresses should tell everyone that applications continue to roll in until the deadline. Theoretically getting it in prior to Jan 31 serves absolutely not purpose. In actuality, the CGO may not be as busy and will spend a few more minutes on it, if submitted early. However, as professionals, they are committed to spending the requisite amount of time on each and all.

Course load, ECAs, and grades are pretty much what they are. Look at the 2011 on-line class profile and plan accordingly for SAT competence. SATs are the one thing over which you still have some control.

Nominations are important. As per USNA, apply for all to which you are eligible. Nov 1 is the deadline for the VP. I don't think there is a Pres deadline but get it in soon. You will have to submit paperwork to ensure your eligibility. It will be one less worry if it is done early (now). Your primary goal right, in addition to SAT improvement, if necessary, should be to get all three of your MOC applications in. The USNA application is the bottom priority.

Good luck. You are fine. Don't let the above misinformation dissudade you. Last year at a Congressional Day the last weekend in October I had a candidate tell me that he had always wanted to go to USNA but his parents would not let him apply. I asked to talk to the parents. We talked. He checked in June 30, Class of 2011. I have also had applicants who knew that they had to apply to their MOC but did not know they had to apply to USNA. USNA did not find out that they were the MOC's Primary candidate until January when they received the list of 10 candidates. They got in.

USNA69,
Thank you for your advice and support. I applied for all nominations for which I am eligible and submitted my Preliminry Application a few days ago. Today, I received an email from a Blue and Gold Officer to set up an interview with me and my parents in two weeks. When will I find out if I even qualify as a candidate? Thank you again for all you help. I really appreciate the time you took to answer my questions.

BGOs only interview official candidates. Wait a few days and email and confirm that this is an "interview" and not a "contact and council". You will probably get your Candidate Number in the interim. Odds are that you are an official candidate. Congrats.

USNA69,
Received official candidate number for admissions, just as you said. I know it is the initial step, but I am excited. Thank you again for all your help!

I agree with USNA69, you are not too late. I know of a boy who decided that he wanted to attend the USMA on 05 January of his senior year. Believe it or not, he received a congressional nomination and did become a cadet. It does happen.

Just got some correspondence from Admissions last week that stated that less than 10% of the anticipated applications have reached interview stage. This candidate is actually early.
