Question on Scholarships and Universities...

Hello,
I am a junior in Texas, and I was wonderin'... Must you apply at a specific college to receive a scholarship from that college?.. I just came from a senior scholarship night... "n.h.s., had to usher"... well, one of the students got a $45,000 to a&m college station, and $40,000 from the army? or something like that... I was wonderin', Would I be able to get such scholarships, or like did she apply to that college, get accepted, then applied for the scholarship and won?.. or did the school send her the scholarship hoping she'd attend?...

P.S., I am hoping I can get enough money for college to where my parents won't have to break the bank.. "my friend's sister is going to UMHB here in texas, and her parent's are currently paying 800 for her sister to attend college.... 800!!! OMG!.. that's NOTHING!!.. ;)...
Any tips as to how i can get money???
THANX ALL FOR ANY INFO...

A scholarship from a school can only be used at that school. Many schools consider all applicants for scholarships when they apply. Others require separate application for special scholarships. Some will offer a scholarship to attract an outstanding student, but those are rare. For outside scholarships, start with www.fastweb.com, and start now.

Dear Bust06,

I cannot say enough about Fastweb! My d was determined to pay her own way through school and she probably applied for forty scholarships. We worked together as a team - she wrote all her own essays and answers to questions and I filled out all the demographic data. So far Torey has received $9000 in scholarships from Target, Best Buy, our local Elks Lodge, our state's horse show association and the FFA. While it was alot of writing for Torey, it was worth it. My advice to you would be to start thinking about how you would answer the most common types of questions asked by scholarship granting organizations, i.e. What is your anticipated major, and why did you choose it? What was the most significant experience you have had in high school? Describe any challenges you have faced and how you overcame them. What do you see as your strengths and your weaknesses? Many times the same essay could be adapted for many of the scholarships Torey applied for, so it helped reduce the writing for her. Definitely go on fastweb - it is an amazing tool, but you need to be disciplined to keep up with applications and postmark dates. I think Torey kept everything in a file on her computer and I made a calendar with each scholarship she applied for, when it had to be postmarked (I subtracted a week for a slush factor - shhhhh, don't tell her - lol!), when it was sent, and when recipients were to be notified. You are going to be done school for the summer - set a goal to work on it so many hours a week, and you'll be in great shape for next year!

Good luck and God bless!!!!!

Also be sure to look up local scholarships. Your school or school district websites/offices/counselors are all good places to look. You can also find good lists sometimes just through a google search for "scholarship lists" etc. in your area. Sometimes this will pull up a nearby school district that has made a website listing local/regional/national competitions that don't always make it onto fastweb.

And for the military - if that's the route you're interested in, investigate army/navy/air force ROTC scholarships, which frequently will pay the full cost of attendance provided you contract to enlist for 5-6 years after graduation.

thanx a lot for all the help...

Gotta get to it!!
